Thunderbird 115.2.2 configuration nightmare

Running KDE desktop and trying to get to grips with the latest version of T’bird I am having real problems with the many changes but most significant are two changes I wish to reverse,
Threads and threading.

It seems that every subfolder is set with message threads enabled. I wish to stop this default for all subdirectories and only enable it when wanted.

Similarly the order of messages is now being shown in threaded groups with date order set by the threading.
How may I stop default behaviour this so that messages arrive in date order without the > required to open.

Finally with my new graphics adaptor all working well I need bigger text as default. There are rather many ways I can change this but at present it is only T’bird I need to change. What should I change please?.

PS I think I have the font size sorted now.

I think issues like these are more likely should be reported to thunderbird rather than here to be honest.

yeah i agree there should be an option to threading or not

You can disable threaded view using the “Message list display options” that you can find in the top right of the messages list:

The select Sort by and select Unthreaded.

To apply this setting other/all folders, you should click the “Choose columns to display” that is also in the top right of the messages list under the “Message list display options”. At the end of the pop-up menu there is “Apply current view to folders and all subfolders”, then select the desired account or directory.

Hi and many thanks. Sadly where you show the Message list display options I have an icon for QuickFolders and next to it the “hamburger” button which does not give what I want.

Lower down in the message column headings line and at the right hand end I have a tiny Select columns to display button. This has a long list of options. Sadly being illiterate I cannot get the list to remain while I take a screen shot but it does have an option “Order received” which does give me an order number but does not get rid of the nested thread order.

How do I get the Message list display options to show please?

I can not imagine this is true, can you take a screen shot of Quick Filter and wat is right and below of it, for reference this is how it looks for me:

Hi and thanks. Here is my screen capture:-

and the top right corner:-

As I explained I have not yet found how to show the hamburger when opened but I am sure that is not what you have advised. Mozilla describe this but it has been hidden by QuickFolders. I may just remove this and keep trying but her are the pictures.

Just tried removing QuickFolders but the icon is still not shown.

Thanks for the screen shot, that helps.

You can get the “Message Header List” back using View → Layout → Message Header List

Hi and many thanks. It took me a while to get the View tab to show as these had not been visible before. I have them both now and working as required. Very many thanks for your help with this. Perhaps fewer nightmares from now on.
Regards,
Budge.

Sadly the nightmare continues. It seems T’bird defaults to Threaded messages. Every “folder” in my message boxes seems to require the message sorting filter to be reset every time I open the App.

Please can somebody help me set the defaults for all “folders” as I wish and not have them change. There must be lines in the configuration file which can be edited but I have no idea what or where. Please help.

I have not seen this before, if you have not found out, here is the way:

In the online thunderbird help there is the paragraph “Applying threading to other folders” (could not link to it directly) where it is described how to change to threading for more folders. It also works the other way around. I tested it and it survives restarts.

The next paragraph " Changing default threading mode" describes how to change the default on new folders. Have not tested that, as I do not regularly add folders.
