The system does not shut down

With the current 6.5xx kernel, my system will not shut down. The monitors stay on, the processor fan. I am forced to forcibly shut down by holding down the key. It does not depend on Opensuse but on the kernel. I am sure of this because with the same kernel I had the same problem on other OSes. The fact is that it is the only kernel I have among the available ones. I only have one. I can’t boot with a previous kernel. Is there any way to solve this problem? Can you guide me through a procedure maybe installing a previous kernel?

This might help: Installing multiple kernel versions | Reference | openSUSE Leap 15.5

I could not find the older kernels on yast or zypper. There is only the most recent one, 6.5.x

I had a similar problem on one of my (AMD) systems with 6.4+ kernel.
Without any details of your HW it’s hard to say, but as a workaround you could try adding “nohpet” (without the quotes) to you boot parameters, see if that helps.

My system has dedicated nvidia graphics and it probably affects. where exactly can I place that parameter?

It depends on your system. Provide more information.

Installing a previous kernel is not a solution. Try to analyse the current issue.

As I said before I have an asus nvidia RTX3050 phoenix graphics card working together with an intel integrated one. The system is tumbleweed.

To try out first (assuming Grub is your boot loader) :

  • when rebooting, in Grub screen : press “e” to edit the default selected entry
  • look for the line with “splash=silent …” it normally ends with “quiet”
  • add ‘nohpet’ right before “quiet” (remember: no quotes)
  • resume booting and test if it works

For a permanent solution, if it works : open Yast Boot Loader → go to “Kernel parameters” tab → adjust the line similar as above.

Hope this helps :+1:

I go to enter it directly on permanent. I read that it may be kvm the reason for the problem. But it is not sure. The system may not be able to turn off that service. So basically the line will be like:
“splash=silent… nohpet quiet” right?

I have this on the kernel parameters:
splash=silent quiet security=apparmor nosimplefb=1

How does the line become?

It should be fine with the following:
splash=silent quiet security=apparmor nosimplefb=1 nohpet

Personally, I like having ‘quiet’ as last one, but don’t recall if the order really matters.
Also, I think you can remove the nosimplefb=1 on newer kernels but you’ll have to experiment. It was needed for solving a black screen problem with nVidia drivers, correct ?

Michele, does the system shut down properly via the Magic SysRq key?
( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key )

Two sources of older TW kernels are TW history and tiwai (kernel developer). Tiwai has 6.4.12 (and older). History only goes back about 4 weeks, so only older 6.5 versions.

Thank you very much. For the time being the problem solved but in the past I had the same kind of error with other new kernels and I added acpi flags on grub.config. It worked for a while but then the problem returned. I hope that this time this flag I did not know about is better than the others.

@Tuner
The keyboard was not responding and I could not give key combination.

@mrmazda
Maybe there will be no need to backtrack with the kernel.

No dice, as I assumed, after a few days of correct operation the pc went back to not shutting down. This latest 6.5 kernel does everything to keep it from shutting down.

Which one can I install of these 6.1 LTS kernel versions?

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/kernel:/6.1/standard/x86_64/

or is better to install the repo?

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/kernel:/6.1/standard/home:tiwai:kernel:6.1.repo

That’s what I expected would occur. You need to track down the root cause of the problem. Searching the journal of the previous boot will give some hints where to investigate further:

You may need to adjust time filters apropriately in the command.

Have you tried a shutdown at a command line? Might try it and see what happens.

What I would do is a Ctrl+Alt-F1 to get to the main text console. Then login as root user. Then execute:

#  telinit 3

That switches the system to ‘multiuser with networking’, but no GUI (prevents any influence from the GUI subsystem).

Finally, execute this to shut down the system (h means halt):

#  shutdown -h  now

Optionally, you could jump down to runlevel 1 (single-user text mode) before executing the shutdown command:

#  telinit 1
#  shutdown -h now

I have the same issue, and there seems nothing wrong appearing in the journal.

Not sure are there any anomalies happened in it?

Might do as I suggested in my previous post and see how the system responds.

Sidenote:
There are situations (hardware?) where there’s ZERO evidence of a problem in the journal logs, because the hardware glitch overrules and the system software can’t capture it.
