If this question belongs in a different part of the forum, please let me know. I’m looking at the possibility of tethering my laptop to my Android device and using the Android as my net connection instead of a router. If anyone has experience in this area, let me know; I’ll start supplying details.

Yep, this can be done. I do it occasionally with a Galaxy S5 over either
USB, bluetooth, or even just using my phone as a hotspot.

Yes, I have done it. Network Manager detects the phone instantly, but
you have to tell the phone that you want to share the connection. The
wording may differ between models and versions.
I have done it via WiFi and via USB cable.

Like others, I tether with my Nexus 4 phone, primarily via USB
(simplest/fastest/least-battery-usage) and it’s great. Network Manager
shows a connection and I choose it (I like to be explicit or it would
probably do so automatically) and away I go.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll give you my hardware & software specs.
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 with 3GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive. It originally ran MS Windows 7, but that OS died; I currently have OpenSUSE 13.2 taking up the entire HD. Because of firmware issues, the wifi has not been functioning. There may be a fix for this; if there is, perhaps one of you could clue me in. In any case, my preferred method of connection will be USB, unless I have a specific reason to do things differently.
The mobile is a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 running Android 5.0.1. I don’t have an SD card in it yet. The internal storage is only about half full, and I can do considerable juggling of the contents if I need to.
When I plug the Samsung into a USB port, I automatically get stuff about managing files; however, I don’t see anything about establishing Net access in either a LAN or 4G context. Do I need to install the right app on the Samsung? If so, which one of the many choices is best? If not, how do I make the tether work just with what I have? Perhaps most important, which questions should I be asking that I’m not?

Watch the Network Manager, or check for new network interfaces with
/sbin/ifconfig

I’ll describe the procedure I do on my Samsung galaxy mini 2, which uses
Android 2 something, so details will be different; and mine is in
Spanish, so my translation will be different than what you’ll see.
I go to adjustments (setup perhaps, a mechanical wheel). I tap on
“wireless connections”. Then there is another one called “wifi zone and
USB modem”. The later word is the one you need to search for. With the
USB cable connected to phone and computer, tap there. Inside there
should be another entry named “modem USB”, with a tick box: tick it, and
then Network manager on your laptop should detect it and connect. In
syslog you will see that instead of a memory card it now sees a modem.
Other entry in the same menu (at least in my phone) is administrate
Wifi zone and help. You don’t need those. Well, “help” might
more info: www.android.com/tether#usb
(from the help on that menu)

With Android 5.0.1, as I recall, all you should have to do is go into
settings and search for “tethering and mobile hotspot” - then turn it
on. That should be all that’s necessary (esp. on a Samsung Note device,
which is probably going to be very similar to my S5).

Now that I remember. If the phone was supplied by the phone company,
they sometimes remove or block this feature. Depends on the company and
the contract…

Yep. Or they charge extra to use it.
