System user passwords-should these be changed from default?

Yast shows passwords for system users and groups. Should these be changed from the defaults for security purposes or will this interfere with the operation of the system? Thank you for your help.

By default system users likely have no passwords (verify in /etc/shadow
if you want) and so you should leave them that way since no-password
accounts cannot login at all normally.

Good luck.

What planet are you on and what Distro are you talking about? It may be
possible to install like that but i will not countenance it. Good
passwords / passphrases for everybody.

He speaks about system users not normal users, system users have no
passwords, the reason they cannot login is that their login shell is set
to an invalid shell like /bin/false.

Hm, I should look first, I see for some system users like at, lp the
shell is set to /bin/bash, now I am confused myself, seems the
/bin/false approach is no longer used.

If you try “su - at” it will request a password, but if I’m not mistaken,
none will work. They are used by tasks that start as root, then change to
that identity; things like that.
