System locking up when sleeping

I set up this box a couple of months ago with 11.1 (64-bit). I’ve been working out the bugs gradually to get it working as a MythTV box. I was getting very close. Everything was working so far. I still have some things to get fixed, but I hadn’t tackled them yet. Anyway, we were using the box to watch our workout DVDs and it’s been great. When I’m done using the system, the screensaver comes on, and eventually the screen blanks.

For about the last week or so, when I try to wake the machine up in the morning, I get nothing. The screen stays off (amber light on the monitor) and it doesn’t respond in any way. They keyboard lights (all 3) flash simultaneously, and constantly.

I was going to check the logs, but after this last one, the system won’t even boot. It seems the /boot partition is corrupt after doing all those hard reboots.

Any suggestions what to look for? Keep in mind that the system was running fine for quite a while before this started occurring. And before you ask, No. I haven’t been keeping a log of changes. I know I should, but it’s so **** tedious (not as tedious as trying to fix a crashing system though).

i GUESS you were using the ‘random’ selection for the screen saver,
right?

problem is that SOME of the screen savers interact in strange ways
with different systems…do one of three things:

  1. pick ONE screen saver an always use it, OR

  2. if/when you change it remember what is running so if it locks up
you know not to use that particular screen saver again, OR

  3. do the more responsible, low carbon solution and turn the screen
OFF if you are not using it (heck, turn the entire machine AND screen
    off)
