I am currently haveing a problem booting openSUSE Leap 42.3. The
system started it’s strange behavior several days ago. It began after
I did a power off>hibernate instead of my normal power off>shutdown.
It had been running normally for several months prior, and I hadn’t
made any changes in my system that should have cause this kind of
problem.
When booting, the system shows the boot menu choices for openSUSE Leap
43.3 and Advanced Options. The advanced options are for linux version
4.4.87-25 (the default), 4.4.85-22, and the two associated recovery
modes. The problem occurs on all five choices.
The boot proceeds normally, and since I have the boot command line
containing splash=0, I can see the various message scroll by. The
operation continues as expected until I get to a message “Startin Switch
Root”. The disk access light blinks for about 15 seconds (as is
normal), then the screen clears (actually switches from ptty7 to
ptty1) and I get the message “You are in rescue mode”, followed by
instrctions to enter root password to run “journalctl -xb” and
“systemctl reboot” or hit Ctl-D to continue. If I hit ctl-D, the
process repeats. If I try systemctl, the process repeate. If I try
“shutdown -r now” the process repeats. If I try “init 5” my system
load into kde plasma 5 like it should. OK, I have a work around, but
I want to know how to fix the problem.
The journal provides no information that shows me the problem. I
cannot find any error listed, and the word “error” does not appear
anywhere in the journal. I cannot attach the journal here, and I
don’t want to past all 1750 lines here, but this is the section from
just before I go into recover mode to a little after.
