Synaptic

I have tried to install synaptic, but it didn’t run. Can somebody help me?

I have tried to install it by apt, but the package could not be found.

No, you would have to tell us what’s wrong with it. Error messages
usually help.

Are you aware of YaST?
http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Modules/Software_Management

Kind regards,
Andreas Stieger

apt is not for openSUSE. Please use yast or zypper. Synaptic is already available in the repositories.

>apt-get install synaptic
Lese Paketlisten… Fertig
Erzeuge Abhängigkeitsbaum… Fertig
E: Konnte Paket synaptic nicht finden

That is the error message. Do you know the repository which includes synaptic? I am not aware of Yast, but I am missing some debian packages and synaptic is easier and faster.

Yes, but what repository?:shame:

  1. go to http://software.opensuse.org/search
  2. type in synapic
  3. spin the dial to your version
  4. click search
  5. pick your poison & be happy

Assuming that you are using KDE:

Under the main menu (accessed by clicking the SUSE lizard on the bottom left corner of the screen), go to:
Applications -> System -> Configuration -> Administrative Settings.

This will launch Yast tool - a very comprehensive tool to manage many things. Choose Software Management under Software tab. You can search for packages too there. Also, explore other options of the tool.

The packages I found by searching were only synaptic touchpad utilies or something like that. Or I am to silly for it. I have OpenSUSE 11.1, mabey that could be the problem.

Okay, I have found it for 10.3, so I believe it isn’t available for 11.1. Am I right?

It is available for 11.1 too.
Did you follow my instructions to search in Yast?

Yes, I did. But there was only synaptics touchpad etc.

I thought you were looking for this? What is the other synaptic package?

I am to silly for that. But if somebody could post the whole package name, I won’t be able to do something wrong :shame::shame::shame:

actually, i’ve been watching this thread and now i’m pretty sure that
you don’t really know what you want…because “Synapic” is a package
manager for Debian distributions (like Ubuntu)…

if it will run on openSUSE that is news to me…

here we use YaST or zypper, or others to manage our rpm packages
(versus the deb packages that synapic manages)…

read all of this: http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts

and, especially the part about package management:
http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts#Software_handling_in_openSUSE_.28Package_Management.29

and, http://en.opensuse.org/Yast for a gui package manager, or
http://en.opensuse.org/Zypper for a command line package manager…

and, just a bit of advice: instead of writing “I have tried to install
synaptic, but it didn’t run. Can somebody help me?” which we all read
thinking you KNOW what you NEED, and you NEED synaptic, when in fact
if you had written something like “How do i update or add programs to
my openSUSE?” you would have had a better answer two days ago…

and, my advice would be to forget installing debian packages…sure i
guess it is possible, but why not let YaST find the correct rpm and
save yourself some trouble??

Do you know a rpm package “aircrack”? I am only able to find the debian package.

is your google broken?
i found this one in about 20 seconds:

http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=downloads#rpm_packages

there are probably many more…

plus, you can always download the source and compile it yourself…
