Switching to fullscreen video display logs-out user

Hello - I hope this is the right forum… 15.6 seems to have a problem on my HP ZBook (Intel Core i7-4700MQ, Nvidia Quadro K610M) that I hadn’t seen in any of the 15.x versions before. After the last few ‘vanilla’ installs of KDE on this laptop, whenever I switch to fullscreen in Mplayer/VLC/etc., the screen switches to text mode and displays 2 lines, then I get kicked to the login screen. When I login, most running apps are gone. (thunderbird, firefox, etc.)

Plasma X11 displays at login screen. Everything else seems nominal. I have not installed NVidia display drivers.

I’m guessing there’s a big, master logfile that saved that error? I’d like to troubleshoot. This doesn’t seem to happen on, say, online videos when I switch to FS.

Thank You!!

EDIT: This may be a complicated problem. I tried switching to Weyland/Plasma and the laptop screen was fine, but the external monitor display is quite scrambled (interestingly: the mouse pointer arrow on the external screen is NOT garbled!).

…and the mouse arrow on the external screen moves normally.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Weird problem, it almost looks like you are jumping into another virtual console or GUI, something you normally trigger with Ctrl-Shift-Fx.

For the log try sudo journalctl -b for the current boot, use sudo journalctl -b -1for the one but last boot.

If you want to share the log try https://paste.opensuse.org/

Thank you very much for the reply!

Sort of - but invoking a virtual console wouldn’t log me off my KDE session (and there’s no reboot involved). Most of the apps that were running when it happens don’t get restarted when I log back in, so it also didn’t go through the “save running apps” process before logout.

So I found the journalctl -f command… for some reason VLC worked this time but MPLayer caused the logout. I started a command shell as user, executed “su”, then ran journalctl -f >& foo.txt as root. Here are the last lines of foo.txt

The command shell, despite being su, died immediately. Maybe I need to background the journalctl command? I’m not sure how to run that independent of my current usr login?

I do not see a reason to run with -f, --follow

Just note down the time the problem happens and then find that time in the journal after you restarted.

It was just an attempt to make sure the error was the last thing that existed in the journal, but I think that wouldn’t work, now that you mention that… so I did your suggestion… note this is in reverse order from staring VLC (any video will cause the error upon switching to full screen mode on the external monitor)

Thank you for the replies and the suggestion. Now at least I can see what is happening after switching to full screen.

…though I don’t understand what it’s telling me… 14:23:41 is when I click VLC to go into full screen…

So, the problem relates to attempting to play video content (full screen)?

Could you share your graphics card details?
inxi -Aa
xrandr --listproviders
glxinfo | grep 'OpenGL renderer string'
That might help others determine next steps/questions etc.

Yes, 14:23:41 and 14:23:42 shows clearly a problem, “Did the X11 server die?”

I had a look at my log starting VLC but nothing logged about libva. Searching for that I found there is a package libva-utils so I installed it, sudo zypper in libva-utils.

Can you install that and run /usr/bin/vainfo and /usr/bin/sfcsample and share the output. It will not fix the problem but maybe make it more simple to reproduce.

Hi Deano - yes, hadn’t seen this issue before 15.6 - this lappie’s been running from, maybe, 15.2? When I switch to full screen display, I get logged off forcefully. Apparently only when using the external monitor, which is connected by HDMI.

FWIW: This laptop has both intel and discrete NVidia graphics card. Long ago, I’d install the nvidia driver but it seems nouveau is more than good enough these days, so I haven’t done anything other than install the default graphics driver(s). This problem with external video monitor on this laptop is new to 15.6. Also, there’s the scrambled-screen problem I mentioned (scrambled screen but mouse cursor arrow is not scrambled and moves normally) when I select “Weyland” at login - again, that’s only with the external monitor.

There is a DisplayPort connection on the side of the laptop. I use a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to connect to the HDMI external monitor.

Sorry the inxi command should have been
inxi -Ga

The library is supplied by ‘intel-hybrid-driver’ package (VA-API implementation for Intel G45 chipsets and Intel HD Graphics). You have a hybrid graphics system, so you may need help configuring that first. Let’s see what others suggest here.

Ok, thanks for posting the graphics details, along with the previous xrandr output…

You should probably investigate using SUSE Prime to take advantage of the NVIDIA chipset?

I don’t want to scare or confuse you, but this thread might also be worth a read through…

@malcolmlewis Can you advise further here?

I see you can reproduce the problem with the command, good.

I guess the first think to check if the is installed.
It is not on my system:

> sudo zypper se intel-hybrid-driver

S | Name | Summary | Type
---+---------------------+----------------------------------------------+--------
   | intel-hybrid-driver | VA driver for Intel G45 & HD Graphics family | package

That is not strange because I run newer hardware.
