Suse distributor/agent?

Hi … good day to all!

I have a simple (might be silly :shame:) question about Suse.
Is there any rules to distribute Suse Linux physical installation (CD/DVD or any other media) and all of the rest e.g. drivers?

I am interested to distribute them or become an agent (if there is specific activity as an agent).

Thank you very much.

Are you referring to openSUSE or SLED/SLES? Guessing the latter…

Hi Deano,

Thanks for your reply.

When I read SLES/SLED for the first time in your reply, I don’t know the meaning of them.
Then as nearly as all of us doing it, I am searching for the meaning in the internet.

Yes Deano, what I have in mind is all of the Suse Linux kind, openSuse and SLED/SLES.

Then how come you want to distribute SUSE, if you know NOTHING about it?
Are you really serious, or nuts? :expressionless: :-/

There is a HUGE difference.

SLED/SLES is the commercial version, so you do need a commercial
agreement with SUSE to distribute it. A serious one.

openSUSE is FREE and GRATIS software, so you can not really SELL it for
a profit. Others have tried and bunked, or barely make some business.
There is a German company doing it, that’s about it. And they talk/write
German only, so to speak. There was a British company that included
printed manuals and phone support. I haven’t heard again of them in years.

You want to do it? Fine, good luck. Really, I wish you luck. There are
people asking for that service, but probably not enough for profit.

To be absolutely clear, you cannot sell the openSUSE software; you can sell DVDs, printed manuals and services but as Robin says you are unlikely to make a profit because people really need to be on the Internet to benefit from openSUSE in which case they don’t need DVDs or manuals because they can get everything on the Internet.

If you want to offer a service, you need to have a rather deep understanding of openSUSE.

The exception is those people with limited (capped) internet, they may
prefer to buy the dvd. But there are already people that sell you the
dvds of about any distribution over the mail, and they are reasonably cheap.

Also, you may sell the dvd in a box with the printed manual; but any
body can download and print that manual, so you have to sell them cheap,
and better made than if we print it ourselves on our home printers (and
mine is good).

Indeed. And not say “I don’t know what SLES is” ;

Thank you Deano for your reply.
Thank you Carlos for your reply.
Thank you Robin for your reply.
Thank you John for your reply.

First of all, I am serious.
This thing come into my head, because to me as a newbie, it will be easier to get all in one media. Then if later on I have to update it, I can download the update automatically from the internet.

Second of all in my first post : “Is there any rules to distribute Suse Linux physical installation (CD/DVD or any other media) and all of the rest e.g. drivers?” … I didn’t say that I want to sell it. I will do it as my personal social responsibility.

Last but seriously not least, thank you for all of your input, I really appreciate it.

As far as I know, you can “reprint” the openSUSE distribution dvd, etc,
with no limitation. You can not say that you represent openSUSE, nor
that they are your own “property”. Just that you burn them and give them
away for free, or for a handling cost. Perhaps.

openSUSE is free software, so you are esentially free to redistribute.
If you modify it in any way, then there are rules.

Please do learn first what Linux and openSUSE is about before embarking
any of these. You talk of drivers… that’s a mistake. I will not
explain why: you have a lot to learn.

That regarding openSUSE. It does not apply to SUSE, rules are different.

Hi Carlos/Robin,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I will keep your statement above in mind.

I wait until openSUSE 13.2 release can be downloaded, then install it to my pc and deeply learn about it since then before I start to make an announcement that I would like to distribute it.

Cheers!

Good day everyone!

  1. (5/11/2014) I am now starting to download openSUSE 13.2.

I will post all the process of establishing openSUSE as my OS in my PC, starting from now (downloading) until up and running well.

Cheers!

If you want to do that, great, but don’t tack it on to this thread. It’s good practice to start another, with suitable title, to catch the attention of any who may be interested. Good luck.

I will make new Thread (named Establishing openSUSE as a newcomer) in order to post all the process of establishing openSUSE as my OS in my PC (as a newcomer), starting from now (downloading) until up and running well.
