I’m a openSUSE Newbie and my sound card don’t work.
I have an ASUS Rampage II Extreme that came with a SupremeFX X-Fi Audio PCI Express card. Intel i7 CPU 920 with 11.7GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX+ with Linux 2.6.27.23-0-1-default x86_64, KDE 4.1.3
openSUSE sees an Intel 82801J1 (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller and installed drivers, those drivers do not doad nor work.
I looked all over the web for drivers and all I found is ASAL drivers with generic instructions for Linux. I can not understand half of what I supposed to do.
Can someone help me with instructions I can follow?
so sorry about that; I had read that drivers would be built into the 2.6.31 kernel that is being developed but that would be some months to year to appearing in a distro;
some have suggested one purchase a sound card that is compatible;
this is the list of compatible hardware that forum members have contributed to:
you could similarly google search on “linux compatible sound cards”
quite a bit of what folks can derive from linux is what they put into it; so some may have the inclination to read about these topics; and bring what they have learned back to the forum; we hope you enjoy OpenSUse
Thanks! I went to Creative Web site and found Linux32/64 bit drivers for the FXi series. The installs were to in a SU terminal in the source directory run “make” and “make install” and that is it! What do I do after that???
I also looked for Cards in the HCL - I’m looking for one of those. Not easy most are no longer sold. I’ve seen newegg that the Turtle Beach RIVIERA 5.1 Channels 24-bit 48KHz PCI Interface Sound Card works in Linus under ALSA.
Can you point me to a whitepaper or instrustions to working with ALSA?
I’m thinking this is some type of test, if I get my system configured without reinstalling Windows I’m in the club…

Newbie (it must get easier after this?)
Well its no real test, and if its only one for yourself But you will make it, im sure you will !
And yes, it will get easier, at least when you install your PC new and come to configure the soundcard again
As you can see on the many many threads here in the forum about how to get this or that soundcard to work, its a difficult stuff and you are not alone !

I think my advice would be to quietly put the X-Fi card in a clean plastic bag till the 2.6.31 kernel emerges with a driver built-in; (I confess we bought an X-Fi second-hand without proper checking of hardware compatibility; it too is carefully stored now, and a very cheap Audigy was sourced; that was easily configured in YaST;)
(and it seems to boom out plenty of noise …)
so that’s what I would advise: most comments about the X-F drivers were rather scathing …
Thanks! I Ordered a Turtle Beach sound card with the cMedia chipset and it was auto configured by openSUSE 11.1 works great!
I have one more test to pass and then I will receive my Linux Wings. If you have time I’m having a partition problem. I posted it in the installation forum.
