Steam Frame on Slowroll

Here is a summary of my setup and the steps that made my Steam Frame work on Slowroll.

Hardware

My main PC, has the following configuration:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7500F
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB

1. Use NetworkManager instead of Wicked

It is necessary to use NetworkManager rather than Wicked to manage the Steam Frame wireless dongle.

I also disabled the onboard Wi-Fi adapter on my motherboard, so the Steam Frame dongle is the only Wi-Fi device in the system.

2. Allow NetworkManager changes without a root password

To avoid being prompted for the root password when launching Steam, I added the following polkit rule.

File: /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/50-networkmanager-local.rules

polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
    if (action.id == "org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.system" &&
        subject.user == "USER" &&
        subject.local &&
        subject.active) {
        return polkit.Result.YES;
    }
});

Replace USER with your actual Linux username.

This allows the active local user to modify system-wide NetworkManager settings without authentication.

3. Set the Wi-Fi regulatory domain

The sotftwarewireless-regdb must be installed , then set the regulatory domain to your country (FR to me):

sudo iw reg set FR

To make this setting persistent across reboots, you can create the following systemd service /etc/systemd/system/wireless-regdom.service :

[Unit]
Description=Set Wi-Fi regulatory domain to FR
After=systemd-modules-load.service
Before=NetworkManager.service systemd-networkd.service iwd.service

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/iw reg set FR
RemainAfterExit=yes

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Then enable it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now wireless-regdom.service

4. Open the required firewall ports

The following ports must be opened using firewalld:

sudo firewall-cmd --permanent \
  --add-port=27031/udp \
  --add-port=27036/udp \
  --add-port=27036-27037/tcp \
  --add-port=10400-10401/udp

sudo firewall-cmd --reload

These rules worked for my setup.

Software versions

  • Host OS: openSUSE Slowroll
  • Steam Frame: SteamOS, standard/stable version
  • Steam on the PC: Standard/stable version
  • SteamVR on the PC: Standard/stable version

I am not using the Beta versions of Steam or SteamVR, nor the SteamOS Beta on the Frame.

Current results

PCVR streaming is working and is perfectly playable overall, but it is not completely flawless. I occasionally experience freezes and brief switches to passthrough during gameplay.

Some users report that switching to Beta versions improves the situation, but I have not tried this yet. For now, I am happy enough with the current results and will stick to the stable versions.

Feel free to comment if you spot anything that could be improved, any security concerns, or anything I may have done incorrectly. Suggestions and improvements are very welcome!

Hopefully, this helps other Slowroll users get their Steam Frame working!
