I’m so disappointed with the internet, that just searching for “facebook spying” makes me go nuts and think about deleting my FB profile. So in order to prevent being spied on, I’m looking for alternatives. Tor is slow, what’s next? I’m deleting my profile today, no more facebook. In fact, I’m thinking on creating a new SocialMedia Network
I have avoided joining facebook. I don’t think I have missed anything important.
However, I don’t particularly try to hide. I use my real name (and initial) on this forum. If you really want to be private, then you can just cut the cable.
LMSO :D. Believe me, this created coffee stains all over the place (it was in my mouth when I read this, literally blew out of my nose), deep family concern about my mental health, neighbours looking out of their front doors to see where the roars came from…
Years ago I saw Krishamurti. One of his “followers” (he’s a philosopher, not some religious ceo) asked what to do about all this disappointment in life. Krishnamurti answered “Expect nothing”.
Serious: deleting your account is by no means removing your data from the web. The best rule in social media: “Don’t post what you would not show on bedroom windows”.
There’s a lot of other things I could say about the entire content of your post, but we have our T&C, which simply means there’s no room for politics (which can hardly be untouched, re. recent developments in the area of internet privacy).

Don’t put stuff on the Internet that you want to keep private.
That’s not enough. Not if you have a partner, kids, friends, relatives that do share parts of your life on the web. Example: My wife doesn’t use FB, Twitter, does use G+ but just to share photo’s with the rest of the family. When she found a new job, I got the “congratulations” messages, before I could have even posted about it if I wanted.
We have to learn to live with the idea that everything we do out there is being kept out there forever. If you think cutting the wire is enough, then cut all wires; think about your SmartTV, your phone, your “intelligent electricity meter” etc. A smart kid at the power company could easily find out when you nuke your food, when you turn on your dishwasher etc.etc.
In short: we are the internet, whether we’re connected ourselves or not. And this is not going to be reversed.

I know someone who actually goes to great lengths to leave a very small
footprint on the Internet - and he succeeds to a great degree, but it’s
also largely because the people who know him respect his wishes.

BTW, he’s not invisible on the 'net (and I’m not saying that), but
there’s not nearly as much information about him as for most people.
Some FB friends did an experiment. The kept on posting about a non-existent friend, on FB and twitter. After a month a search on Google brought pages of non-FB, non-Twitter URLs, plus ads for 50+ dating sites. Part of the experiment were some keywords, one of them was “FAKEPERSONSNAME single”. I did not participate (most of them are not friends of mine, rather professionally related), but the outcome was what I expected. At night in bed I often think that there’s people out there laughing themselves sick with the idea that we think that that is all they can do.
I’m not paranoid, my privacy is of great concern to me, but I’d rather recognize / know what’s going on and learn to find my way to deal with it, than try to stop it somewhere somehow. Having kids IMHO i have no other option, if I don’t want to loose contact with their world.
But over lot of technology & other benefits why to completely stay away from social media? Unless you are a VIP ]
Facebook & Twitter are really great platforms to jump in to the ocean of own interests in a very quick way. At small amount of cost i.e. time, internet usage charges etc ]
But of course, better to hide e-mail addresses, phone numbers, friend list, not to talk about personal life etc.
Some people twit so much that some day they’ll twit 1st saying that building is on fire & then they’ll try to exit…LoL!!!
1 question is, what happens to our profile after our real death. I read about it before on web but not sure about the progress of fb & twitter.Facebook probably will delete accounts where age of user says age 100+ lol!
After Snowden case, more people are concerned about data privacy. Trust on Google is minimizing by people. Yahoo! research hosts sessions on search engine subject. Those sessions are really interesting. They named those sessions as “Yahoo! Big Thinkers”.

someone has to ask for the account to be closed…i only know that
because one of my old friends died about three years ago and about
two years ago i got notified it was his birthday…and i posted to
his account and generically asked: Should someone report this account
to be closed? and some young lady wrote back that she likes being
reminded that her Uncle Frank was such a nice guy, and now gone…

An alternate social network is Diaspora* which is a distributed social network. You can set up your own server/node (or pod as it is called in Diaspora) and keep full control of your data! It’s great Join now and help spread this network!
