Sound stopped working a few days ago

I am running openSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma 5 on Wayland. I am on a laptop with nothing plugged in except power, expecting sound to come through the laptop in-built speakers.

Sound recently stopped working; I noticed this two days ago, Mon 11th Mar 2024. Sound previously worked with no issues since I installed openSUSE in Nov 2023, with no configuration or tweaking required.

I do get sound when I run speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav as suggested in SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE Wiki. However, nothing else seems to be able to play sound; aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_* does not result in any sound, no graphical applications can play sound, and KDE is not aware of any sound cards:

Audio broken after Tumbleweed update

Hey guys. After TW’s last update, my audio is not working at all. Sound stopped in Plasma

My sound has stopped working in Plasma. It is not an issue with my sound cards or drivers as I’ve run speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav and get sound. Plasma shows no devices installed. The volume widged, for example, shows “No output or input devices found” and the audio module in system settings is blank. I’ve run alsa-info. Here is some partial output. No audio devices after latest kernel upgrade

I ran zypper dup --allow-vendor-change yesterday and upgraded to kernel 6.7.7-1-default (64-bit). I noticed a fair number of kernel firmware upgrades go through. Now I have no audio devices recognised, neither the on-board audio, the thunderbolt interfaces, bluetooth headphones etc. Is this a glitch in the upgrade and needs reporting as a bug or is there something I can do to re-instate them? Firefox TW latest updates as of Sunday 2/11/24 EST c. 11p UTC

I have notice that running Plasma Wayland for the last few weeks that from time to time Firefox fails to play audio. Initially I tried rebooting, checking dmesg, etc. nada Then I found that fiddling with the audio(plasmoid?) and tweaking the ‘application volume’ for firefox ‘fixed’ this problem. I have also had this issue but my work around for this is to run this after I log in:

sudo udevadm trigger

This only affects the account I used before I upgraded to Plasma 6. The account I created AFTER I upgraded doesn’t seem to have the same problem.

If Bluetooth is on, you may find that your sound is being redirected to a bluetooth device. tryx swithing Bluetooth off.
