Sound Issues

I have no sound :frowning:

Toshiba Laptop (m45-s265)
Audio output : AC’97, DirectMusic, Directsound3d, Directsound. (this is what the website said for my specs, hopefully it help)

I have absolutely no sound. Have not been able to get banshee to work. Currently trying to test with a m4a format file. I have installed the additional mediaplayers via packman. When I try to open with the Mplayer it reads this error: "AO.alsa-Unable to find simple control.

I have tried a couple things:

  1. terminal/log into root, type “alsaconf” - first it tells me that there is no supported PnP or PCI card found, than wants me to probe legacy ISA sound card/chips, I’ll click yes, than it tells me that if it does that, it might make my OS unstable…needless to say with my lack of experience I back out of that

  2. I than tried going into root and type : alsamixer
now I know in here I’m supposed to make sure that my external amplifier is not disabled / turned off, but I honestly don’t even know what I’m looking at. This probably can’t even be considered as a failed attempt. I did try hitting “M”, and on the vertical strip of colors towards the bottom it changes the MM to 00, or vise versa…

At this point I think my next step would be to get the codec (AD1981B).

My question: Am I even on the right track or approaching this correctly? Does anyone know where to get this codec thats linux/11.2 compatible?

thanks in advance guys, keep chargin’ !!

-cheers

…and oh yea, I did check the volume on the desktop and on the laptop itself…

If you are running alsaconf in openSUSE-11.2 thats actually a mistake. alsaconf is depreciated for 11.2 and it only works for openSUSE-11.1 and earlier.

You asked about codecs, before we get codecs, can we do some basic tests?

What are you using for a speaker test ?

Please try each of these speaker tests:

  • first:
 speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
  • second, try again:
speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
  • third:
speaker-test -c2 -D hw:0,0 -t wav -l3
  • fourth, this next command has a volume meter at the bottom of its output with a changing number of #'s and %'s to show volume levels so run this command and tell me if the number of #'s and %'s are changing:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_*
  • fifth: and also:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav

Do any of those give an indication of sound ?

Try with and without headset. Also try as a regular user and in a terminal as a user with root permissions.

IF sound in ANY of the above as a regular user in speakers, stop NOW and post and advise you have sound as a regular user in speakers. IF note, then please provide the information recommended to be provided in the 2nd half of our multimedia stickie: Welcome to multimedia sub-area - openSUSE Forums

And I quote from that stickie:

… please post … providing in your post the following information:

  • provide the URLs (of a summary webpage) that are created by running the diagnostic script noted here:
SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE - Script to run to obtain detailed information. On openSUSE-11.1 and newer that will ask you to run the script /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh and after the script finishes it will give you a URL to pass to the support personnel. Please post here the output URL. Just the URL. You may need to run that script twice (the first time with root permissions to update in the /usr/sbin directory, and the second time to get the URL).
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -qa ‘alsa#and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -qa ‘pulse#and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: rpm -q libasound2 #and post output here
  • in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: uname -a #and post output here
  • for openSUSE-11.1 or earlier, in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound #and post output here
  • for openSUSE-11.2 or later, in a terminal, or xterm, or konsole, type: cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf #and post output here

well, I did the first two without head phone, and they worked, I did the first one with headphones, and It worked. Please keep in mind that the file I’m trying to play is m4a. Please also keep in mind that I opened up the packman repo, and installed a whole bunch of media players.

Unfortunatly that still wouldn’t explain why things like banshee won’t work, or even mplayer…

…the next step???

-cheers

Well, I think we proved the sound driver is more or less working. So lets make some suppositions about what might not be working and try to go from there.

Its possible there is a codec problem? Its possible there is a desktop configuration problem impacting sound. Its possible there is a multimedia application problem. …

So lets try to narrow that down a bit.

First off, we need to eliminate some unknowns that will confuse the issue. So please setup your software repositories with 4 and only 4 software repositories. Three of those 4 are OSS, Non-OSS, and Update (the official Novell/SuSE-GmbH repositories). The 4th is the Packman repository. The 1st 3 should already be setup. All you have to do is add the 4th and remove/disable any others than those 4, keeping just those 4: OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. In case you have not done this before, there is guidance here: Repositories/11.2 - openSUSE-Community … again, for now just those 4.

Now with those 4 in place, go to YaST > Software > Software Management and ensure you have any Novell/SuSE-GmbH packaged versions (or videolan packaged version) of gstreamer applications replaced by Packman packaged versions. You can tell Packman packaged versions by the pm in the version number. Also install libffmpeg0 from Packman , which will pick up many codecs as part of its dependencies. Installing smplayer and vlc (2 excellent multimedia players) at the same time is also a good idea.

Some of this you may have done, but sorting the repository issue is fundamental to getting this to work. Again, ONLY those 4 repositories, and replace any Novell/SuSE-GmbH/videlan/other repository packaged apps with Packman packaged apps where available.

Are you using gnome or KDE ?

I’m a bit confused here. Your first post noted NO sound at all. Now you are asking about m4a. Is that your only issue now? Playing that format ?

Sometimes what I do, when I encounter a codec that I am not familiar with, and I want to get a hint as to what packaged application might handle it, I do a search on the packman web site. … For example, for m4a: PackMan :: Suchergebnisse

Gnome (not sure wich version, the one that comes w/ the .iso 32 bit.

As far as the m4a - no I have not succesfully gotten sound out of this computer until I did the tests, I just didn’t know if it was becasue of that file extension and maybe mediaplayers I installed through packman with zypper just didn’t cover that.

those 4 repositories only are now active.

I also hate to throw a monkey wrench in this, but please be advise that when I did those previous sound tests, I was in runlevel 3 command line, and NOT a terminal via the GUI. Something motivated me to run the sound tests again through the terminal in the GUI and immediatly the first test did not work.

Playback open error: -2,No such file or directory
ALSA lib pcm.c:2211:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.front

This is what I got, and it never stopped, just kept on going down the screen…did not bother trying the second test.

Iam not seeing Novell/suse-GmbH anywhere at all

gstreamer0_10- libnice ,-plugins-base, -plugin_good, -schroedinger, -utils, and gstreamer-utils, and of course gstreamer0_10 …I do have these…

I would like to also throw out the multimedia installation I did after I set up packman…went into a terminal than typed this

zypper in libavcodec52 ffmpeg libdvdread4 libffmpeg0 libquicktime0 linxine1 linxinel1-codecs libxvidcore4 smplayer vlc w32codecall xine-ui xvidcore … I thought you should kow this…

but again, the sound test worked in runlevel three, and since I have been running opensuse 11.2 I have never gotten sound, this includes banshee…

thank you

Thats a good test. It suggests to me that pulse audio which is loaded around the same time as Gnome is adding a complicating factor.

Unfortunately I’m not a pulse audio guru. I think one of the pulse audio apps is a control application, and one can use that to tune pulse audio.

I documented my gnome experiences here: http://forums.opensuse.org/global-moderators-area/427470-1st-opensuse-gnome-install-years.html

Unfortunately I did not write down/record the name of the gnome application that one can use to control the sound.

Possibly it is called "pavucontrol ".

So, does that me I have to find " pavucontrol" and try to configure it?

Unfortunatly I know nothing about this, or how I would properly configure. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of pulse audio.

Is there anything else I should do before this to maybe troubleshoot a little farther? Did I set up the media players properly with packman, and is there anymore that I should setup?

Thank you

Unfortunately, you have installed Gnome, where for some hardware (and not all) the pulse audio implementation is not very good.

As for sound concepts, and what Pulse Audio might be, and what other things wrt sound might be, is too much for me to explain in a post, especially since I’ve typed the same thing over and over many times in the past. So instead, I created a wiki with a very very very very brief explanation of basic Linux sound concepts: Sound-concepts - openSUSE such that I do NOT have to keep retyping.

Also, this is in the openSUSE manuals/documentation, and my guess is you have not read any of the documentation. You could also look at the documentation.

I have been reading opensuse documentation, but not really for sound, so I’ll check that out and attempt to figure out the proper pavucontrol configuration. Thanks for the help though

okay, I followed your link…did some reading, and used the pulseaudio tips and tricks as a guide. I can confidently say that some worked, and I probrably jacked up the rest. please show mercy

Banshee as usual did nothing for me so I went to terminal and used mplayer to play an .mp3 file, this is what happend

Did you attempt to change the mplayer audio output mode to a different setting?

Do you Sleep? I mean really, you are very consistent with your fast responses…Kudos to you…

but to answer your question, I doubt it…I’m so lost at this point ‘oldcpu’, I just don’t know where to go at this point…

Install the front end smplayer to MPlayer. It makes it easier to control MPlayer’s features. And in smplayer under options > preferences you can easily tune this.
