(Solved) suse 10.3: Where is the terminal?

suse 10.3: Where is the terminal?

I wasted a few hours looking for the terminal, via yast, Google, the Wiki & documentation. Does anyone know how to access the terminal or Suse 10.3’s equivalent of a terminal.

This way, I’ll be able to install tarballs

Press Alt+F2 and serach for “terminal”.

There are many terminals in OpenSUSE; at least one will come up in the search.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Much obliged
There is no way one would have arrived at that conclusion on one’s own, or without prior knowledge of the function keys!

Glad to help!

The terminals can also be found in the application menus in both Gnome and KDE.

Again, using the search field in those windows should also bring up a few of the terminals.

xterm always works afaik,

gnome-terminal for Gnome installs…
konsole for KDE installs…

Good luck.

hmmmm, but did you click on the system menu (at the bottom of the
screen, in the left corner of a default install of both KDE and Gnome)
and browse around…or type ‘terminal’ in the search blank there??

or did you try the terminals available in most any distro by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+Fn where n = 1 thru 6 (and F7 brings you back to the GUI)??

perhaps a few other openSuSE basics you might need are in
http://tinyurl.com/66h4rw

otoh i also found it impossible to search for and find: How to
open a terminal. AMAZINGLY inept is both google and help.opensuse.org’s
search algorithm in that task…

it is a most basic instruction give here “Open a terminal and…” and i
can’t learn how to do that without asking!!

> This way, I’ll be able to install tarballs

most popular software is installable via YaST (standard GUI package
management thingy for SuSE) or a 10.3 new apt- or yum-like (if you speak
Debian or RH) package manager named zypper [see man]…

oh, that “see man” means to:

  • hold down the Alt key and press F2

  • type konsole (if using KDE) gnome-terminal (if using Gnome) or xterm
(for most any X) and press enter
[or use the menu to nav to a terminal icon]

  • then, in the new pops up, type man zypper and press enter

have fun

Thank again!

** My Response:** The bold font is used to illustrate how one could easily one can infer that your thought process was as follows: "There is no excuse that one could offer for not being able to find a terminal in Suse: The rebuttal is that I never had trouble finding a terminal in Fedora, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux,DSL or Knoppix or windows. Therefore, the only X-factor is how Suse arranges info.

** My Response:** Some might say that the connotation of the preceding sentence is ambiguous and not necessarily positive. I choose to see it as a positive.

** My Response:** This is either a statement intended to say that perhaps you believe that’s it’s disappointing that one cannot find this info in Google, and moreover, it’s inconceivable to think that some of Suse 10.3’s search programs cannot easily find this most basic yet utterly important piece of info.

My Response: Either you now have first hand knowledge of how difficult it is to find this information, or this is a thinly disguised effort to mock me. In all honesty, I can not discern your feelings although I do admit a certain curiosity for civil and perhaps tactical reasons, should such a need arise.

My Response: A response would be welcome
Cheers: Thanks for the Debian scoop! Regards

Do not know what this means.
However, thanks again!

Kmenu > System > Terminal > Konsole (Terminal Program)

If it is not on your taskbar. right click it > Add Application > navigate as above and select “Konsole (Terminal Program)”
Then right click that icon and select “move” & move it to your desired location on the taskbar.

It used to come pre-configured:p
Have fun:)

Done!

Thanks bro!

This thread is now solved. It’s too bad it can’t be marked as such :)t

This is not to discourage, but rather, it’s my way of saying "please help those, who unlike me, still need help with their issue.

i went to the web forum to try to see what you were talking about with
the “bold font” remark…and i can’t see a bold font there either…so,
i don’t understand that remark…

as far as trying to infer my thought process…i don’t understand that
either…

i didn’t say or intend to say that there was no excuse that you couldn’t
find it…i was, however surprised, that you apparently didn’t see a
terminal icon and instead of looking in the menu went to google…

i can also find terminals in RH, Fedora, Ubuntu etc etc etc and
have…because if i don’t see it on the task bar i pop open the menu
and look for it under something similar to system > utils or config…

i would always do that before going to google for three hours…ymmv

well look, you seemed to be saying that SuSE was so different from all
the others that you were completely lost…well, did you LOOK at that
URL, it is titled “Basic openSUSE Linux concepts” and i thought it might
be HELPFUL to you…

i meant that it seemed pure stupid to me that it IS impossible (i know
because i TRIED also) to find out how the heck “to open a terminal”…

it is impossible to find via google, in the opensuse wiki or web
forum…well, it is impossible for me to find in about an hour (which
was the LIMIT of my patience!)

i was not mocking…i had TRIED it and could NOT believe how really
difficult it is to learn how to “open a terminal”…

you got it…i tried to figure out how to do it on the web site and
couldn’t!!

> Cheers: Thanks for the Debian scoop! Regards

i don’t know what that mean? unless it means: thanks for the tip to try
zypper which is kinda like the apt i’m used to…

peace…don’t try to read too deep into what i write…i try to write
WHAT I MEAN to say, clearly…that is, if i thought you were too stupid
to find an obvious and easily found terminal i would have done one of
two things:

  • said you were stupid, or

  • not figured you were worth helping…and, saved my time for someone
else…and you would have never heard from me…

Well, I am glad that I asked. Now I know where we stand. It would seem that our discourse has reaffirmed that time proven statement. The mediums of speech & text lack mathematical precision & harmony.

Thanks for the response.

In point of fact, I did look through the start menu before turning to Google & the Wiki. I even resorted to systematically clicking through all Icons, knowing that sooner or later, one would point me to the terminal. However, I gave up after 10 or so minutes. It is only this post that revealed the link between the terminal & one of the Yast thingys.

oh no…i was right there with you until you threw in that technical
jargon!! D:
