I noticed that editing the thread subject to [solved] (when appropriate) is not reflected in the subscribed threads list (didn’t check others). Maybe it is intended not to be reflected, just thought I’d mention it.
Also for my money the requested-notification droplist should default to the last option used (or to one set in profile, if)?
When you are satisfied with the answers/solutions given, it is enough (and people do like it when you do, specially when you provide some details on what you did in a more difficult case) when you mention that in a post. You can of course use the word “solved” when you like.
There is no “official” SOLVED status for a thread as it is always possible that others might still want to add comments, etc.
Here I do not understand what you mean. It may be that I never did what you did, in any case it is unclear to me where you click or (otherwise do something). But others may know and tune in.
I wasn’t thinking official-status or anything that formal, merely letting the OP edit the subject accordingly so it becomes visible in lists that there has been a fix/workaround
By the last comment I meant for the notification preference droplist for a new posting to default to the last option used (such as “via instant email”). I prefer this method so I would expect to check that radio-button only once until I want to change the preference.

In the past, editing the Subject line prefixing “SOLVED” was possible and the updated text would be seen in the thread index.
I’ve just edited the subject line as I’ve described, and it’ll be interesting if the result is still the same as before.
This has never been suggested or enforced, but AFAIK always been possible.
EDIT - Well, it looks like the result isn’t as I expected.
The edited subject line only appears in my post and does not update the entire thread which is what happened long ago.

I couldn’t even get that much done, which is why I posted in the first place. For my money if the [solved] can be edited-in when it is solved that’s acceptable too. I’m not very familiar with web hosted forums, I do usenet most of the time.

And indeed that’s why editing is generally tuned way down here - because
of those of us who use the NNTP interface - edits don’t (and really can’t
easily) pass the gateway.
Also why editing the subject line is generally not helpful.

IMHO it is rather futile to change the subject line. It will only show art the top of the new post, Not at the top of the thread. Not in any list of threads found using a search or in your settings (list of subscribed threads, etc.). So the benefit is very restricted and not many will look twice at it, if at all (at least I will not).
In fact, my experience is that those who start posting that things are SOLVED (in what way) are the first ones to add new information, even new questions in that same thread >:).
In addition, we’ve talked about it before and rarely would the OP come back and
take the time to mark it solved, and the forum volunteer staff are too busy to
search out and mark threads as solved so even if we had a way to do it, 90% of
the time it wouldn’t get done.

And, until it was pointed out, I – too – thought that was a fly. 
I didn’t wanna make a federal case out of it, just noticed that on many other forums that’s how it works and that it is really just an OPTION with no adverse effects on health if exercised. It also works that way on usenet, one of a 1000 reasons why I prefer it to web hosted groups.

The software we use doesn’t really support it, AFAICR.

I’m a bit hesitant to post here as the thread is quite old but after all it’s about this very thing, and the fact that the feature wasn’t in the software then but is now (quite recently). There is now a plugin for the problem of marking a thread as “solved”.
