Coming from Arch, Gentoo and Fedora and was a bit tired of system breaking every now and then, I checked out OpenSUSE and wasn’t that thrilled after checking some reviews and videos here and there.
I wanted a stable, but somehow up to date Linux distribution and I do like Gnome so i thought I’ll give it a shot.
Man, am I glad I did.
What can I say, it’s rock solid. Beautiful and responsive. Just waiting for an update of Wine so I can play Wow again, but until then, the single far best Linux distribution I’ve ever layed my hands on.
I do miss “OpenSUSE branded” 4K wallpapers but I’ll just create them myself in Gimp.
Glad you have found something that satisfies you. I have certainly been satisfied with the overall quality of the distro and the support in these forums.
I used SUSE/OpenSUSE, for 13 years, then switched to Ubuntu/Xubuntu in 2013, but the current release (16.04), is their VISTA, and I decided to try OpenSUSE again, and its quite good. I doubt I will switch back. I tried Fedora 23; it’s a dog, and Elementary OS, is interesting…that’s all I can say about it. I would use a *BSD, but in the slightly less perfect, real world, Open SUSE plus a VM of OpenBSD is as close to perfect as one can get in computing.perfect world. This laptop I’m using was a freebie - a core i3, 8GB of RAM, Lenovo B590. It’s a great system, and meets my laptop needs completely. I have a W530, core i7, with 24GB of RAM, but its still a pure Win. 10 box, and I run VM’s on it, usually some Linux, or *BSD.
I’m in the same situation, new to openSUSE looking for something stable. I’ve been on *buntu flavors for the majority of the time I’ve been on Linux but I tried out Leap for a month or two and liked it. Now I’m giving Tumbleweed a try because I do need some more up to date software and I really like the rolling release updates (I used to use Arch too)
Glad to see that you have been having a good experience with openSUSE. I think you will like it here.
I’ve been using openSUSE since 2011. I think with any distro it is going to have ups and downs. Most of my experience has been extremely positive. So much so that I have spent very little time looking to fix problems. I am currently using 42.1 and other than some of the silliness with Qt5, it is tip-top.
BTW, I am still using a Dell Latitude D630 with 8GB of RAM. Runs smooth as butter.
If you need a newer version of Wine you can just install it (what makes openSUSE so great compared to other distributions, that you can get packages of new software for older distros, with Debian you cannot handpick new software with deb files, you have to compile/build yourself).
