I tried a few different linux distros a few years ago, SUSE being my favorite, but I only had one computer and a terribly small HDD. After a few weeks had passed and I still couldnt figure out how to do what I believed to be simple tasks I decided to go back to XP.
Fast Forward to the present and I now have a PS3 up and running with SuSE 11.1 (as slow as it may be) & I’m thinking this is a perfect way to learn how to use linux. I know that I will not be getting all of the eye candy or the ability to do all of the uber things linux can do on a PC. I’m ok with that, I just want to learn how to use it well enough so that I can feel comfortable uninstalling xp and installing SUSE on my main pc.
This brings me to my question. Is there a guide out there that explains how to slim down SUSE for use on a ps3. I found one for Fedora 7 using the all mighty google. (Im wondering if I can use the same guide for SUSE.) Linux development on the PlayStation 3, Part 2: Working with memory
I know it would be much easier to install YDL but I think I can learn a lot more if I do it the hard way.
EDIT
sorry for the deceptive title, I realized only after posting that it looks like a statement instead of a question.
There are probably a lot of other articles. Also, per your inquiry,
many of the optimizations for Fedora (or any Linux distro) apply to
every other Linux distro so feel free to experiment. If you try
something like modifying a configuration file be sure you create a
backup FIRST (before you perform the modification) and also have a
LiveCD or LiveDVD on hand (any distro’s media should be fine) so you can
roll back your changes in just a couple quick minutes. Also a lot of
optimizations may happen in user space. On many systems people find
they want to disable Beagle and so that has come up regularly in here.
Others, on a system level, want to disable IPv6 so requests to their ISP
using IPv6 don’t fail and waste time just because their ISP doesn’t
support the standard.
Anyway, hope that gives you some confidence. You’re on the right track.
Good luck.
