skipped services in runlevel 5 but cannot log in on command line

I have a system that had been working flawlessly but but have now broken.

When I boot I eventually get a command line login with the prompt:

Welcome to openSUSE 11.3 “Teal” - Kernel 2.6.34.7-0.7-desktop (tty1)

(none) login:

When I type in a user name and enter it does not prompt for password but immediately tells me the login is incorrect and returns to the login prompt.

I can boot using another linux on another hard disk and read the suse file systems and fsck them but that hasn’t helped.

Part of the boot.msg is:

I could not include the full file as it was too long but there was much whinging about not finding awk.

Similar posts have been solved by logging in as root then running sax2 to fix the X configuration but I can’t log in.

The problem appeared after I had installed sotware to read ext2/3/4 filesystems in Windows (yes I accept that was unwise) and I had also tried running Aptosid live from a pen drive. The video settings were wrong and I had to restart to get out of it. I don’t know whether either or neither of these has caused the problem but the problem appeared the first time I tried to boot openSUSE after that.

Any suggestions other than “Don’t play with a working system”? I don’t really want to reinstall if I don’t have to.

This is my first post

Thanks

Can you boot to a liveCD and confirm that your hard disk partitions ( / and /home) are not full ?

Hmmm … it appears you have done this free space check already.

This worries me that you may have over written system file(s) essential for the boot.

I assume you tried the Fail Safe boot ?

If you can boot another Linux system. I suggest you do that and backup anything you need from this damaged install of openSUSE

Boot for a live cd and save your files.

Install awk. For this you will need to boot another linux, mount this one,
mount bind proc, dev and sys, then chroot, and use rpm command line to
install awk.

No way similar.

Unrelated. Prove it

Reading files or installing things in windows can not affect. Writing, yes.

Cheers / Saludos,

(from 11.2 x86_64 “Emerald” at Telcontar)

It isn’t fixed but is at least different. Thanks robin_listas.

It can now find awk after I booted into Fedora mounted the suse root directory and issued this command

chroot /media/SUSE rpm -U --force ./gawk-3.1.6-31.1.x86_64.rpm

I still can’t log into SUSE as the command line login won’t prompt for a password the same as before.

df -h
### openSUSE home folder
ls -lh ~/

I wonder if you’ve run out of space on / (root) or the wrong uid:gid for .Xauthority

I agree with Carlos E. R. unless you over wrote a file or folder in openSUSE from Windows its not a problem, although system time discrepancies between openSUSE and Windows can cause issues.

Tarapharazon,

/media/SuSE is the suse root file system mounted in Fedora

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdc5 40G 11G 29G 28% /
tmpfs 4.0G 432K 4.0G 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sdb7 126G 94G 25G 80% /suse/home
/dev/sdc6 49G 3.4G 43G 8% /scientific
/dev/sde1 7.5G 2.9G 4.7G 38% /media/KINGSTON
/dev/sdb6 20G 9.1G 9.7G 49% /media/SuSE

So there is plenty of space.

It was read and write from windows and it changed the name of the disk as it appeared to windows and Fedora picks up the name change too as it mounts it as /media/SuSE. That does not appear to have any effect on mounting any of the file systems. I did not knowingly write or delete any files.

How do I check the uid:gid for .Xauthority ?

Peter

A disk name change would set my systems as unbootable. If you are using
labels in grub or fstab you would have problems.

Ok.

Try runlevel 3 instead of 5.
Try ssh-in from another computer.

You should not have jexec, I think.

Something is killed here. Probably irrelevant.

This should not matter, I think. Unless your system is a guest :-?

This I don’t understand, it is halting.

Cheers / Saludos,

Not sure why read write would change the name of the disk, but it could affect the userid:groupid and permissions on the files. Plenty of room.

Sorry I should have requested this before, can you post output from

### where /suse/home is your /home on suse?
ls -lh /suse/home
### where /etc/fstab is suse
cat /etc/fstab

Just to make sure its not a permission issue.

.Xauthority and .ICEauthority are hidden files, and when there userid:groupid or permissions are changed can block access to your system.
ls -l will show the userid:groupid or uid:gid usually username : users.

Carlos E. R. suggests you may need to change mapping of your drives in /etc/fstab, so, lets take a look at how they are mounted.

One of the first things I tried before posting was the disk names in fstab. The original is below:

/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD3200AAKS-_WD-WCARW5197291-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD3200AAKS-_WD-WCARW5197291-part6 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD3200AAKS-_WD-WCARW5197291-part7 /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2
#/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST3160827AS_3MT07J4G-part1 /windows/C ntfs-3g users,gid=users,fmask=133,dmask=022,locale=en_GB.UTF-8 0 0

/dev/sda1 /home/petera/data	ntfs-3g uid=1003,gid=100,umask=0022,locale=en_GB.UTF-8	0 0
/dev/sdc4	none swap	sw,pri=8 0 0
/dev/sdb2	/freebsd/old ufs	rw,ufstype=ufs2,noauto,users	0 0
/dev/sdb8	/freebsd/old/sdb8	ufs	rw,ufstype=ufs2,noauto,users	0 0	#root
/dev/sdb9 none swap	sw,pri=8 0 0

/dev/sdb12	/freebsd/old/sdb12 ufs rw,ufstype=ufs2,noauto 0 0	#/usr incl home directories
/dev/sdc2	/freebsd/8 ufs rw,ufstype=ufs2,noauto,users 0 0	#pcbsd root

I then tried changing the first three lines to :

/dev/sdb5	swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sdb6	/ ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/sdb7	/home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2

which had no effect. There is still no difference now the awk problem is fixed.

Grub seems to work without problems as I suspect I wouldn’t be able to boot at all if it didn’t

I have checked the .Xauthority and .ICEauthority files

-rw-------. 1 1003 users 70K 2011-02-09 15:32 .ICEauthority
-rw-------. 1 1003 users 0 2010-07-19 16:23 .Xauthority

Any problems with them should not affect a login prompt from working properly. There is no graphical login but a command line login doesn’t prompt for a password and simply says login failed,

I think I had disabled all ssh logins (root certainly). I don’t have access to another linux box here but will try when I get home tonight.

The three lines were correct; I said the problems were “labels”, and you
anr not using labels, but id.

Use “splash=verbose”.

There is a problem there, it is using the UID number instead of name, which
means that user 1003 does not exist in /etc/passwd. You should check that
file, and all your home files: they must belong to you.

I don’t know if any of what I just said will make it work, we are grasping
at straws here :frowning:

I have a vague recollection of a similar problem months ago, but I can’t
remember what it was nor where I saw it. Pam perhaps… :-?

It’s a useful thing to have…

My thoughts are Aptosid on the USB might be the original culprit. Not sure what you might have tried to do with Aptosid or if your partitions were mounted r/o vs r/w for Aptosid. If Aptosid is the culprit, have you tried login with the default password for Aptosid?

Posting .Xauthority and .ICEauthority without listing other files is a guess, out of context.

The “awk” error messages out of the ifup means the path isn’t set to /bin/awk or /usr/bin/awk. Should I assume you’ve run fsck on / (root) and /home? Verified openSUSE packages?

zypper ve

And afterwards try to boot normally to openSUSE?

If you try any of the above could you post output from

dmesg | tail -n 30
###
tail -n 30 /var/log/messages

Worst case you can reinstall or upgrade openSUSE.

I really appreciate the time you have thought about the problem and all of your suggestions but I think I have reached the point of cutting my losses and reinstalling.

I still can’t log in either remotely using ssh (I get the message that there is no authentication protocol available), or from the console. In both cases I still don’t get a chance to enter a password. Editing inittab to boot to run level 3 didn’t change the login problem.

Booting from a suse rescue disk then chmod and running “zypper ve” didn’t show up any problems. More radically I tried upgrading the distribution using zypper, it seemed to work but didn’t fix the problem.

Thank-you everyone for your help. I have learned a lot.

Cheers,

Peter

2 last things then, I had an issue once when for some reason unknown my keys would double up. I enter k and the keyboard entered kk or kkk. IIRC, I typed something where I got to see the keypress and managed to fix the problem. The other is you probably need to reinstall rather than upgrade.
