simple microphone install ?

Hi,

What do i have to do in order to install and use a simple microphone with skype under suse ?

thanks

First you have to make microphone work in opensuse.

See what is Yast saying in Hardware -> Sound. Increase levels and enable buttons there. Reboot. Activate certain switches in kmix, maybe raise levels. Reboot.

Get krecord to record the sound.

Only after that try skype.

Neither microphone nor skype are in easy in Linux; rarely they work from the first attempt.

The only sound hardware that yast detects is the onboard MCP73

Along the lines of ZStephan’s recommendation, there is guidance here for generically configuring your mic in openSUSE Linux: Microphone - openSUSE

Note its best to initially test in a terminal with the command:

arecord -vv -fdat foo.wav

where “foo.wav” is an arbitrary file name that you ‘make up’ . Pay very close attention to your mixer settings, ensuring capture levels are not muted, that their settings are moved up, and any mic boost is applied.

If you want us to take a more detailed look because you are unsuccessful with “arecord” then please provide the information recommended to be provided in the second half of our multimedia stickie: Welcome to multimedia sub-area - openSUSE Forums

Once you get your basic mic functionality working, then someone else will need help you with Skype, because I never use it.

This is not bad.

Yast will not detect headphones, audio systems, microphones. But it is supposed to detect all sound cards.

thanks… it seems to work now
