How do I run avidemux in order for the shutdown option to work under linux with a normal user account.
I am using suse 11.
I tried running as sudo.
I tried running avidemux logged in as root for a test and did not power off. I was left at a root prompt in, I think, init3 asking for password.

hmmm…i’ve never run Avidemux so i don’t know how you are running it
now (or how it can be run)…
that is, are you booting up to (say) KDE, Gnome, or some other display
environment and then (say) click an icon (or use a terminal command
line) to launch Avidemux?
or, do you boot directly into Avidemux?
i ask, because if you boot to (say) KDE i’d say: what happens if you
just shut down Avidemux (the way its documentation tells you to) and
then Right Click Desktop > choose “Log Out [user]” > choose “Turn Off
Computer”
or, if it boots directly into Avidemux (as the only environment
available) what happens if you shut down Avidemux according to its
documentation, and then at the resulting prompt, log in as root and
enter this
shutdown -h now
and press enter??

I boot into KDE.
When using avidemux, after you have set the options you want and then click “Save”, and then set file name and location, a window opens that is titled “Encoding”.
The “Encoding” window shows encoding progress, and displays some statistics. It also has an option box which can be checked that is titled “Shutdown computer when finished”.
When I attempted to check that box a dialog window opens that says “Privileges Required” “Root privileges are required to perform this operation”.
Normal users can shutdown when going through the menu.
I can use “shutdown -h now” at a terminal in “super user mode”.
I have used “shutdown -h +xxx” (xxx=time before shutdown) after estimating time remaining.
I want the computer to sence when the avidemux process has finished and then power off.
i’ve never actually used Avidemux but i have used google…and, with
it i find from April of this year:
“Current version of adm is still without “shutdown after batch” (or
whatever you called it) option in joblist. Can you add this option?”
was answered with “You can simply do this at the operating system
level. Just create a simple batch file (or a script) that runs the
Avidemux queue first, then shuts down the computer.”

but, the Avidemux folks were not kind enough to actually supply that
simple batch file…(google might find it, but i don’t time to look
this second)
i’m not a batch file writer (sorry) but i bet if you post into the
sub-forum here named “Programming/Scripting” with a subject something
like:
“auto-shutdown computer when Avidemux finishes”
i’d bet you find a geek that can help!!
