Is there nothing that runs in GNOME?

I looked at minicom but it seemed rather complicated to just type in a
few commands to a serial control.

Ted

Search between these: Gentoo-Portage - Browse net-dialup
But cutecom, gtkterm, komport… looks like there is no graphical minicom apps still mantained.

‘seyon’ is what you want. It should be in YaST if you search (I’m not
on 11 right now, but it shows up in 10.3). If not, you can get it here:

ftp.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/suse/i586/seyon-2.20c-1089.1.i586.rpm

Both minicom and seyon get upset and quit because they do not see a
modem. This computer does not have a modem. It has a serial port
connected to another serial device I am trying to communicate with. It
is a direct serial connection.

Ted

Have you tried Putty?

I haven’t looked at the version that runs on *NIX, but the latest versions that run on Windows include a Terminal emulator (that can communicate through serial ports)

I’d had no problems using minicom with a serial device that’s not a modem. All you have to do is disable the init strings and that modem stuff. Another possible reason you may not be able to connect is that you have not arranged for the hardware handshake lines to be active or at least looped back to an active output. Things like DCD, CTS, RTS, stuff I haven’t touched for a while.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I used minicom to setup
Link and Wyse dumb terminals, no modem anywhere in sight. How did I do
it? Truthfully, I no longer have a clue! But I do know it is in
the setup. If you do some searching, on the web and in man/info files,
you should be able to find what you need.

I’m a little too busy currently to get back into that, having no
pressing need right now to do so, but I could look at it later this
week when I come back from the mountains (going to do some high
altitude camping to ‘recharge’). If you can’t find the info, leave a
msg here and I will try later this week . . .
