I have an ongoing video problem. My TW is up to date via Myrlyn and Discover. I dual boot with Windows and this problem does not appear there.
I have two monitors connected. The problem monitor is a TV connected via hdmi. The other monitor is a regular computer monitor connected the old way (RGB?) and has no problems. The hdmi monitor will flicker rapidly and then go to black. I can recover, sometimes, by rapidly pressing a key on my keyboard (usually the shift key, since it takes no action on the blank screen.) A more long lasting fix is to run an .mp4 video of any length. I don’t know if it’s related, but if I open links from PCWorld emails, my system locks up so badly, I have to power off to reboot.
The problems are most likely Nvidia. I have a GeForce GT 730 PCIe/SSE2 card. I have numerous nvidia drivers installed. They are all basically GO5. There are a couple of noveau files listed and libraries for x11 and wayland. I have 8GB of RAM.
Please tell me how to fix this issue, including what info I can supply and how to do it.
I only have one monitor connected with the desktop (it’s a Dell 38 inch curved monitor, so no TV desired). The monitor also has KVM technology, so I have a laptop that only runs Windows 10, and the desktop running Leap 15.6 (it used to run TW, but I abandoned it), so with KVM, I can instantly switch between both machines (and run picture in picture).
I avoid anything “NVIDIA” because it’s problematic. The desktop has 128 gb RAM and AMD video with (I think) 32 gb RAM.
The monitor has two HDMI ports, and a single DP port. The Windows laptop is connected via HDMI.
I could NEVER get the openSUSE desktop to render properly using HDMI. The moment I switched the desktop to use DP, all rendering problems went away. I have no idea why using HDMI was problematic … but the 2 minutes it took to swap to the DP cable was a quick solution.
So, if you have a DP cable and the TV /computer supports it, might try that, as a quick troubleshooting step.
I had a similar problem with a TV plugged into an NVIDIA graphics card. The only thing I can think of is to turn off power saving options on the TV settings and see if that helps.
I could not find any power settings. I did, however, change an hdmi setting that I was previously unaware of. It is meant to be more forgiving of the signal. It will take time to tell if it helps.
This was a fool’s errand. I have dozens of cables; in my house and in storage. I rummaged though everything to find a DP adapter with no luck. Then, I noticed that the video adapter on my second pc allowed a usb connection to DP. This computer gives me no video trouble. But it is not plagued by Nvidia. So, to see if the issue could be resolved by a new cable switch, I decided to test it on the troublesome computer. That’s when I discovered that the troublesome computer has no DP input, which doesn’t matter since the pc without the problem has no hdmi input! Just to finish the whole problem off, I realized I use the DP adapter because the monitor (tv) has no DP inputs! AAARRRGH! So, I now keep an mp4 handy to run when the flicker starts. Thanks for trying help me resolve this. I very much appreciate it.
