After update of OpenSuse 11.2 to 11.3, my graphics resolution was reduced wrt colors and pixels. Since there is now nomore sax2 and xorg.conf has not been modified I am not very happy about the update.
Whats the best alternative to sax2 proposed ? ( I have been working with Suse Linux since 10 years now, so I got very used to sax!)

but please do not post help requests to a non-help forum!!!
For the “distribution politics” aspect (at least in the title of this thread) you may be interested in this openFATE issue: #308357: Please, replacement for Sax2 in 11.3, and now for 11.4 https://features.opensuse.org/308357
Yes, actually there is a hole in the configuration process. If you are lucky, all works out of the box.
If not, you have to spend much time in searching and editing files.
IMHO not so good.
I will explain this using my configuration as an example and then make a suggestion (I have a question, too).
First My example:
I have installed 11.3 out of the box on an old thinkpad a31p (radeon lx) with a difficult configuration. The laptop screen (1600x1200) is defect and so I use the laptop on a port replicator, which has it’s vga output connected to a 24" monitor (1920x1200).
With 11.2 I used a manually created xorg.conf to manage this environment.
Now with 11.3 I have as login screen always the resolution of 1024x768.
After login I can change with the system settings display applet the two screens. I disable the laptop screen (DVI-0) and set the external monitor to 1920x1200 (VGA-0).
It works!
The funny thing is, that at the next reboot or login DVI-0 will be still disabled, but the external screen VGA-0 will be 1024x768 again.
By the way, this is the resolution found as a mode line in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER_RANDR_MODE_auto.
I have read the SDB “Configuring graphics card” entry and also some threads (especially this) and decided to use xrandr as it is the new way managing screens.
Question:
I want to set my screen configuration for the login dialog and for all users, so probably I have to edit one of the files in /etc/X11/xdm or ./xinit to insert the xrandr calls. Which would be the best one?
Suggestion:
The system config display dialog works well.
Wouldn’t it be good to offer inside this dialog two buttons: “Make persistent for this user” “Make persistent for login & all users”?
