I normally use Audacity. Help pages tell me to connect the speaker output to the microphone input. Is it possible to record directly from the sound card without connecting the speaker output to the microphone input?

Should be able to create a loop device for example: Playing with ALSA loopback devices | Playing with Systems
I usually just use ScreenRecorder, then extract the audio. Quality is good for my needs.
