Recommendations for CD Ripping Software (+ Hardware) in 2026

I have accumulated a few Music CDs that I want to rip to FLAC. A lot of advice out there (from what I researched) regarding what software to use to properly rip CDs are either 5+ years old, or come from Windows/Mac users (sometimes both!). I was wondering if there is any consensus regarding what CD ripping software in Linux.

Below are Links to All the CD Ripping Software I could find for Linux so far:

Hardware advice is welcome too, given I am looking for a new drive/enclosure + drive, though not the focus (unless there is something specific I should know regarding CD/Blu-Ray Drive Hardware on Linux).

K3B is great for about anything. I haven’t used anything else in years, except for Handbrake when transcoding.

As for hardware, you mention an enclosure. Does your computer not have a 5.25 bay? If it does I’d go with a full size SATA DVD or Blu-ray writer.

Small USB optical disc drives are usually slower than a good full size SATA drive in an enclosure, but they’re much cheaper. 5.25 enclosures are available, but they cost as much as an ATX case on a good sale.

Depending on your frequency of use a full size drive is preferable if it’s not a cost or space issue. I’d go with a Blu-ray writer if there’s any chance you’re going to back up files like photos or anything else.

Modern cell phones are capable of pretty good quality photos and backing up to optical disc allows you to have a few copies at a reasonable price.

I’m not fond of the newer glass computer enclosures at all. I finally found a really nice one though it’s quite large and expensive. It has twelve 5.25 bays if that’s what I want to use them for.

I did buy a USB Blu-ray/DVD combo at a thrift store for $5. It’ll read both, but will only write to DVD. It works very well too, but it’s slower than my internal optical drives which are both LG Blu-ray writers.

K3B is freshly maintained and is naturally available in the OpenSUSE repos. I personally don’t look further.

You will also probably want a good tagger such as KID3.

Well…

Something like https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/AccurateRip or similar (sorry, W article in German only) is essential for me.

Been using k3b forever. Rips all tracks of an album in one operation and titles all the files properly. I tried many others and the individual track file labeling was an issue on all of them.

My favourite is ‘Asunder’ - this works with bolt up computors and plug in DVD players.

Another Asunder user here.
