I have been running my Canon Pixma MP460 for years on suse linux. Worked fine also after upgrade to suse 11.4. I was running MP460 using MP160 drivers as per some forum information when 460 drivers were not available. Some recent updates, however, have killed operation of my printer. Will not even print a test page.
I have tried my old MP160 driver and variations of same and new MP460 drivers from CUPS-Gutenprint.
Consistent error message is: “The PPD version (134566257) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.7.”
I downgraded and upgraded CUPS. I have deleted and reinstalled many printer drivers for MP160 and MP460. I have run the “cups-genppdupdate.5.2” per the error log message and other cups update programs in the same directory. Keep getting same message.
Printer works when I reboot to windows 7 so hardware has not failed.
System is: suse 11.4 32 bit w/usb mp460 printer.
Hate to bid farewell to my old faithful printer. Thanks for any help or ideas,
Tom Kosvic
Consistent error message is: “The PPD version (134566257) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.7.”
I haven’t been in this position before, (so I’m in uncharted territory here), but this command might do the trick (as root)
/usr/sbin/cups-genppdupdate
If all goes well, then restart CUPS
rccups restart
Hopefully this will work for you.
deano_ferrari,
thanks for the kind response. I did try those tips you gave me and the printer did not come alive again. I had done those previously in my permutations of various drivers and those commands did not work. The commands are suggested by the cups-error-file.
Thanks again but I am afraid I am still looking for a solution.

Hi Tom
I just had a look at the Canon CUPS drivers included with the openSUSE 11.3 distro, and found the MP460 (and MP160) gutenprint drivers are available (in the list of supported models).
Try configuring your printer manually via the CUPS http interface:
http://localhost:631/admin
Click on ‘Add Printer’ and enter your root credentials when prompted. Follow the prompts given…
I have deleted and reinstalled printer *.ppd files many times through printer setup program in yast2 and also through the online site as you suggested.
I have checked that the *.ppd file is on my machine. A “find” search says it is at:
/etc/cups/ppd/canonmp460.ppd
I have opened this file with gedit and it looks like it is a good file, i.e., not corrupted. It’s ownerships are root, root.
I have also looked at files below which look ok to casual observer:
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/cups.conf
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf
Are there other files to look at?
I continue to consistently get this same error message in cups error file after trying to print a test page from the yast2 print program or other pages I have tried and I have tried printing through many other programs. Message is:
“The PPD version (135291521) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.7.”
It is a little strange that I get the same number (135291521) whether I use the mp160 or the mp460 drivers. I have looked at downgrading Gutenprint to previous version but not tried that. I have deleted and reinstalled both cups and Gutenprint but no change.
Again, this printer worked great until the last week or so; even after upgrade to suse 11.4. To state again, the printer still works on windows7 that is dual boot on this machine.
I am going to post this error onto the cups forum sites to see what I can get but access is not working for some reason.
Thanks for your kind follow up and suggestions.
Tom Kosvic

It’s not an online site, it’s a web interface provided by CUPS residing on your system.
What does this report?
rpm -qa |grep cups
I wonder if the cups-drivers package got updated properly?
Deano_ferrari,
Thanks again, Per your suggestion command reports items below:
tom@linux-j2h2:~> rpm -qa |grep cups
cups-client-1.4.6-7.8.1.i586
libgnomecups-0.2.3-122.1.i586
cups-libs-1.4.6-7.8.1.i586
python-cups-1.9.52-4.1.i586
python-cupshelpers-1.2.5-4.1.i586
cups-1.4.6-7.8.1.i586
cups-backends-1.0-264.1.i586
I got same message from the cups web interface, i.e.,
“The PPD version (135301241) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.7.”
Again I get this same message using mp160 driver or mp460 drivers. And again, the mp160 driver worked successfully for a few years prior to the last week or so.
A curiosity is that I have Gutenprint 5.2.6-5.1 installed; not Gutenprint 5.2.7 as all the error messages keep saying.
Perhaps that observation has some relevance.
On the package install interface, I can’t go back to a previous version of Gutenprint but could probably do that manually.
I did go back to an older cups version and had no change in error messages and then upgraded it to current again.
Thanks again,
Tom Kosvic
Ok, learned that the cups-drivers package (openSUSE 11.3) was replaced with the cups-backends package (openSUSE 11.4), as explained here. (It’s not relevant to your situation anyway).
I have the ‘openprinting-gutenprint-5.2.7’ package installed from OpenPrinting.org

Yes, that is relevant. The OSS repo has the older version of gutenprint. You can either update, as I did via the the appropriate RPM listed in the OpenPrinting site, or via the OpenSUSE Software Search:
software.opensuse.org: Search Results
The gutenprint-5.2.7-27.1 RPM can be installed as a single RPM, or add the Printing repo, then update.
deano_ferrari,
It worked. Printing now works at least as far as Test Page from the printer config program.
I downloaded updated gutenprint rpm then installed it. Software install process showed both old and new gutenprints were installed and printing still did not work.
I added the suse/11.4/print repo to my repository list. I then deleted both cups and gutenprint. I then reinstalled from the repo distribution.
Voila, it worked.
I was committed to get a new printer tomorrow (probably HP because of their linux support) and use my mp460 for windows only but you saved me a couple of hundred dollars. I owe you a beverage of your choice should we ever meet in person.
I am in minnesota, US.
Thanks, Tom Kosvic

My pleasure Tom. If, I’m ever in your neck of the woods (or vice versa), I’ll take you up on that!
