Hi,
I’m new to Linux but eager to learn. I am currently running openSUSE 11.4 on my Toshiba A505 laptop. I’m not certain about the exact model number of the wireless adapter but I believe it’s made by Realtek. It does not show up in my list of network connections in YaST so I assume I’ll need a driver for it. If anyone knows where I could get one and how to install it, I’d be very grateful.
And if someone has already started a thread about this, sorry, I’d be glad to be re-directed.
Thanks!

2 choices. I’d probably go for the kernel update
(1) I’m fairly sure you need to add this repo
Index of /repositories/driver:/wireless/11.4-update
And use compat wireless
(2) But if you use a updated kernel from here
Index of /repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard
It should just work !

Thanks for the reply. When I go to the link you provide (for the wireless upgrade) though I’m somewhat baffled as to which of the multitudes of .rpm packages to download. Sorry for my noobishness, but which one do I need?
I assume I would download the file and install it using YaST. How would I go about updating the kernel?

To update the kernel
add the repo like this
su -
zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/ kernel
then do
zypper dup -r kernel
But first tell me if you use a graphics driver like nvidia or ATI? That would complicate it for you.

I don’t believe I’m using either of those graphics cards. Is there any way to install the compat wireless without an internet connection? I’m in a sort of chicken-and-egg situation here- I need to download the package to fix my wireless so I can download the package so I can fix my… If I could download it with another system and install it off a USB flash drive that’d be real handy.

If it were me, I’d probably make a copy of the repo
Index of /repositories/driver:/wireless/11.4-update
Then use it a local repo from your HD.
I use gftp to fetch repos.
Trouble is, I’m not sure it will help because I’m fairly sure you need to already have the latest updates.
Getting to a wired connection should be possible, surely?
It’s more than likely you’ll need this: compat-wireless-kmp-desktop
Assuming you use kernel-desktop
