Radeon driver fails after some updates unless I forcibly reinstall it

Everytime I try to boot my TW installation after a big update, the boot fails, because KMS stops working. I have to append the nomodeset option to the kernel for it to boot. But I have a radeon graphics card and the radeon (amdgpu) driver needs KMS, so that makes the driver fail to load. To enable hardware acceleration again, I have to forcibly reinstall the radeon (amdgpu) drivers. I’m running the opensource (amdgpu) driver.

Any reason why this is happening? This has been happening to me ever since I’ve installed the system.
