Question about point upgrade breaking an official package

Hello all,

I am a long time Linux user but relatively new to openSUSE. I recently upgraded my 15.2 installation to 15.3, and I noticed that a package I use often (Rapid Photo Downloader) no longer ran. Looking at the repository, I see that there is no official release of Rapid Photo Downloader for 15.3. I uninstalled the old version of Rapid Photo Downloader and was able to install the current version using instructions at the developer’s website.

Nevertheless, I was surprised and disappointed to see that a point release upgrade would break an official package in the repository. Is this typical for openSUSE, or am I missing something? What packages are maintained and upgraded for each point release/major release? I never observed this behavior in the other distros I used. Broken community packages, yes, but never broken official packages with a point release upgrade. Based on this experience, I wouldn’t be surprised to discover other official packages broken in the coming weeks.

Hi
How did you perform the upgrade? It is there in the Main Repository for Leap 15.3?

zypper if rapid-photo-downloader

Information for package rapid-photo-downloader:
-----------------------------------------------
Repository : Main Repository
Name : rapid-photo-downloader
Version : 0.9.26-bp153.1.18

Thanks for your reply, Malcolm. I upgraded using the live USB, as described in this video: https://youtu.be/9belOEjiKi4

I believe the version reported back by zypper in your reply was the one I had installed, and it did not run post upgrade. When I look at the Rapid-Photo-Downloader page under openSUSE Software, I see the following: “There is no official package available for openSUSE Leap 15.3”. I concluded this was the reason the app wasn’t running on my system post upgrade. Is that not true? Do you think the issue is specific to my installation?

I see the following: “There is no official package available for openSUSE Leap 15.3”.

This is a known bug of software.opensuse.org.

Leap 15.3 is often not shown in the results.

Hmmm. I tried uninstalling Rapid-Photo-Downloader (the newer version from the developer’s website), then (re)installed the version from the main repository. Now it ran!

I swear I did not make up this issue! I looked through my bash history to see what the error message was that came up , but it was no longer there.

Anyway, thanks for your help. Sorry to be a bother!

Hi
No worries, always good to ask  Just use zypper as the web search is a bit borked at the moment…

Calling almost a year “the moment” is rather stretching definition of the “moment” …

Just a quick follow-up: Is it safe to assume that packages installed from the main repository will not be broken (e.g. dependency issues) following point upgrades?
What about community packages?

I think you can be sure that people are trying to avoid such mishaps for any version. Not only for what you call “point upgrades”.

That is up to the maintainers. But again, I assume that they try to keep their packages going.
