Project Rebrand?

At the moment, the Geeko Foundation has no formal ties to the openSUSE Project, and no role in it’s governance. That’s one of the things that needs to be talked about and sorted out.

So basically this renaming openSUSE to something else. Whoever manages the website, is going to go crazy with the 301 redirects to the new domain  if and when this happens.

Can’t this be called Geeko Linux since the foundation already exists? Or openGeeko. Search results are not really a problem at all - as a digital marketer by profession, it would take less than a month with all the chatter that would happen later on, to get this project to result 1 on page 1.

There is already a Gecko Linux, so there would be some confusion between the names.

Interesting, I have been following the same subject on mailing-list. For me its more of a nostalgic thing to keep the openSUSE brand. I started with SuSE 2004 (working a lot with Novell then).

Wiser Penguins than me will address the issues with rebranding. EQT SA is based in Luxemburg, Main owner is EQT AB in Sweden and I have meet associates in line within work of other branches. I will not comment further on that.

The good thing about geckos is that there are many species. So, why not go for Tokay Linux?

Could you please get informed properly first? Simplifying == ignoring complexity. A trademark ™ is not something an organization can mess around with.

Agreed - wild speculation is not helpful to this discussion.

With the current issues in KDE6, I’m appreciating 15.6 on 1 laptop. I do plan on moving another laptop to whatever is after 15.6.

Same here. I went from Solaris to openSolaris, then SuSE 8.0 to openSuSE. :disappointed_relieved: :disappointed_relieved: :disappointed_relieved:

Please keep this on-topic

The video is a must watch and I like the new logo. We're all grown up: openSUSE is not SUSE - media.ccc.de

Yes, that video is very informative.

I can see for the upstream projects, there is a good reason to rebrand, along with establishing a good governance model, and geared to be more contributor friendly. It seems to me (and some others attending that talk) that the Leap (product) distro might be a special case, with it being significantly derived from downstream SUSE contributions. I guess it could still benefit from sharing the same governance and project branding though.

Looking at what Richard was saying in that talk – (I must admit that I missed it at the oSC 2024) – and, also given what Robert said in that talk, my guess is that, Leap isn’t really a special case (if it was then, MicroOS is also a special case) because, the build isn’t done by SUSE – it’s built by the community OBS – as is everything else – Tumbleweed, Slowroll, Aeon, Kalpa and MicroOS – and therefore it’s a community product.

  • Yes, Leap core is SLE but, there are other packages included in Leap which aren’t maintained by SUSE employees.
For example, Bug Reports against the Leap GNOME and the Leap KDE Plasma packages are usually passed “up-stream” to the parent organisation.
The Leap Oracle VirtualBox packages and, the Leap LibreOffice packages and, the Leap Scribus packages are also special cases; there’s a long list of other specialised GUI packages which are all special cases and, not part of SLE …

The Geeko Foundation and the SUSE “Geeko” Logo – Richard mentioned that the name has an issue in that, there are two other Operating Systems with that name.

  • But, they’re Operating Systems and neither communities nor foundations. And, the Geeko Logo has been associated with SUSE since the very beginning.

I agree with Richard, it would be nice to have a community named “Geeko” (or, “Geekos”) which oversees the various projects / distributions but, someone will have to fix the legal branding issues.

And, it would be nice to have the community linked to the Foundation in order that, we, the community can help to support the efforts financially.

I use exclusively Leap (at work and at home).

I watched that video and in my opinion, you should change opensuse to suse.
Some people (like me) want to use a stable and tested OS like leap and the clear connection
with SLED makes a good impression (to me at least).

@dcurtisfra I have multiple Leap systems… Compute Node for Kubernetes, ADS-B tracking, pihole and on the road laptop, oh also have a 2007 Macbook running Leap 15.6 with XFCE… They out number my MicroOS and Tumbleweed (singular) install(s).

This is not an option, so isn’t even worth discussing.

Tokay Linux… I really like the name :slightly_smiling_face:

In my opinion, the new name & logo should definitely have a connection to the world of geckos. Over the years, users have become accustomed to the Chamaeleon and I think many non-openSUSE users associate Tumbleweed & Leap with a Chamaeleon.

I personaly really liked the name openSUSE but maybe it is time to move on because we’re all grown up now.

“Tokay” is, in my opinion, a long-established and registered name for something else good.
Tokaji or Tokay is the name of the wines from the Tokaj wine region in Hungary or the adjoining Tokaj wine region in Slovakia.

Its always nice… Governance. I stay with the subject about rebranding. Not Impressed…Regards
