Problem with wired connection SIS191

Greetings to everyone this is my first post here.

I have recently installed openSUSE 11.1 and all went fine, except that i cant cant browse other web-pages than google.com and few others.I am trying to conect to internet via ADSL.

I tried everything, changing name servers in ‘/etc/resolve.conf’,disable firewall, changing eth0 MTU to 1492 ,disable ipv6, compiling new kernel…etc. Probably is something with resolving because i can ping every IP or domains, but whois command work just with IP’S.

The strange thing is that everything is OK if i use PCLOS or Fedora, but there is problem when i use openSUSE or Ubuntu.

This is very strange that if it is working when you use Fedora or PCLOS. Have you actually checked again with Fedora? Or, was it like when you tried last time it worked?

Also, you said it works for some sites like google etc. I feel that the name servers have some problem (the ones listed in the /etc/resolve.conf). Try nslookup and see what is the result. This will tell you whether the name servers are working correctly or not.

nslookup www.oracle.com

Thanks for quick reply syampillai, here are outputs from some commands. About Fedora i have dual boot on same PC, everything is OK when i boot with Fedora but i get those problems which i describe in my first post when i boot with openSUSE.

Also i forget to mention, i can connect to a server via SSH, but after executing some command like “ps aux” i cant receive any output ,and i cant receive/send data from that server.

It looks like everything OK but since it is stopping in between, I doubt the network getting stuck up in between. You can just try the ssh program (as mentioned in your post) and snoop the packets using wireshark from one of the terminal windows. See what happens when it stopped working.

Make also sure that 1492 is the right MTU.

PPTP slow? - openSUSE Forums

Thank you all, but it seams that there is no solution about this, i have try everything that i found on ubuntu snd suse forums about this problem and i guess the only solution will be to change my buggy SIS191 network card.

I have a p5sd2-vm with this NIC. The driver seems to install but does not work correctly. I can boot with XP and it works fine. The network just says its not connected. I have read that there are ubuntu users having problems with it as well.

I have a similar problem. I have got multi-boot laptop with windows XP and OpenSUSE 11.1 x86-64 with onboard lan sis191. When I boot with XP lan works fine, and when I boot with suse I cannot ping anything except myself. Also I try boot under OpenSUSE 11.1 i586 I can ping everything but I cannot connect to any host by any port and any protocol. All FireWalls in suse and another hosts was turn off. Also I try to boot from LiveCD with ubuntu and ASP Linux and problem the same.

Why sis191 work in Windows XP and does not work in Linux???>:(>:(

Why SIS191 is buggy if it works on Windows XP? It seams to me that something wrong with kernel module for sis191.

On the other hand I can ARPING default gateway. Here is some additional information…

Why I can arping and cannot ping default gateway?

hi,
you might not want to consider nVidia. My card is ck804 and the symptoms are very similar:
-I can browse several pages of mozilla but nothing else (no google for me…)

  • I can ping/traceroute
-ssh hangs but ftp authenticates and hangs before the ftp> prompt
-nslookup works but whois does not (neither by name nor IP)
-the connection worked fine with previous os (RH enterprise 4 – i guess i should not have been in such a hurry to get rid of it…) and with some live cds
  • I also tried changing name servers in resolv.conf, disabled the firewall, reduced MTU,disabled ipv6 --and there i drew the line: no kernel compiling for me
it really seems an unsolvable problem and since I am even more clueless with hardware than software, I will be changing OS rather than network cards… it seems it has to be either openSolaris (yawn) or openBSD (shudder).
Question: what version of fedora are you using because the latest had the same network problems for me

All problems seem to have disappeared with the new driver in opensuse 11.2 for me.
