problem with intel graphic card

Hi

I have openSuse 11.2 and a intel GMA 4500MHD graphic card. I haven’t found any driver for it. Could someone help me? I don’t know even if it exist.

Thankyou very much

Open a terminal and become su and do

lspci -v

hwinfo --gfxcard

Post the graphics info

The Intel GMA 4500MHD should be supported now. There was a massive thread about it and a Toshiba laptop, about a year ago: Toshiba Portégé M800-10C doesn’t seem to like linux : ’ ( - Page 2 - openSUSE Forums
and in that thread are links to various bug reports raised over a year ago, on the functionality of the Intel 4500MHD with Linux.

My understanding is openSUSE-11.2 comes with an open source (free) graphic driver based on support from Intel that is inside the xorg-x11-driver-video rpm (called “intel”). I think the support for the Intel 4500MHD should be now be included with that package?

It should be loaded automatically upon boot of openSUSE-11.2 with no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in place. But if there is difficulty there, one can create a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to force the loading of either the VESA graphic driver, or the Intel graphic driver, best configured from the full screen terminal mode known as “run level 3”.

One boots to run level 3 by pressing “3” (no quotes) when the initial grub boot menu first appears. By pressing “3” one will see the “3” appear in the options line. Then boot normally. That brings one to a full screen text login. Login as a regular user. Then after logged in, type “su” (no quotes - enter root password) to switch users to the administrator/root.

If one wishes to force sax2 to create an xorg.conf file for the open source free VESA driver, then one would type in run level 3 (NOT in X window):

sax2 -r -m 0=vesa

(that is zero equals vesa and assumes one has only 1 graphic hardware device on one’s PC)

… or instead of VESA, to load the Intel open source driver “intel” , one types:

sax2 -r -m 0=intel

Then if successful to configure, close sax2, and restart one’s PC by typing “sax2 -r now”.

To shutdown one can type “sax2 -h now”.

Hi

I have put “sax2 -r -m 0=vesa” but then only open the X Window of SaX2. What I have to do?

Sorry I’m just a begginer.

Thankyou very much

The “sax2 -r -m 0=vesa” should probe your graphic card, and propose a graphic configuration. It should have markers at each corner, to let you know it is sized properly, and it should ask you if it is OK ? If it is ok, then acknowledge the dialog box (that asks if it is oK) that it is ok. That will put you back at a text prompt (with a # indicating you have root permissions). It will save your graphic configuration to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, which is now your graphic configuration file.

Just type “shutdown -r now” (no quotes) and that will reboot your PC. This time do NOT press “3” when the grub boot menu appears.

That will get you X windows with the VESA graphic driver.

If you wish to try the “intel” driver then follow my instructions above using the “sax2 -r -m 0=intel” command to try configure the Intel driver.

I’m going back to this comment. What makes you think all was not OK in the first place?

I’m using openFoam, with paraWiev, and I can’t see nothing in it. The system information gives me that the graphic card controller is unknow. Thats because I think that the problem is with the graphic card.

I’m going to try again your solution.

Thanks very much to both

Personally I would try this:

Boot to level 3
http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pwsm_EXa6nz1W2cnJPLosB_FDgAOE0dfd12FzKz5-G27iD8Wsp6BcbpUPmZGu7mcbo1-Iqee2key-R_nfHwQpIg/1%20Initial%20Boot.png

http://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1p0xcLBIsCh6WJDOJKa-VKGo5JRSlRs4WcXCGXfZ9YqiBYH-zkFe0uOde_aRqM-3o-rAYCtOvsFf8x3tTb71qDpg/2%20Edit%20the%20Boot%20line.png

Login as user, then become su

Now do this:

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf xorg.conf.bak

reboot

Then boot as normal and login
open a terminal and type this: glxgears

report result

Its not immediately obvious as to what the card is, other than an Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series. It appears to me the vendor:device ID is 8086:2a42 and 8086:2a43 which is an Intel Corporation Mobile 4 series. I saw one post that had the vendor/device ID in the same context as an Intel GM45 but no more detail. I did not look too deep, and likely your PC documentation has all the information.

You can determine what sax2 thinks the card might be by typing with root permissions:

sax2 -p

caf4926 has a good point/question. Does your PC run X window currently? Can you only boot to a text mode?

Thats an application that runs under X ? Hence it reads to me that your card was likely running properly under X, and changing to the VESA driver may have been a mistake.
