I have recently done the upgrade to Leap 16.0 with Gnome from Leap 15.6. I’ve managed to find most of the apps and tools that I was used to, but the printer is a problem. Last year I purposely bought a new Epson Expression XP-4205 printer because of the support over the years for their printers. This printer worked very well under Leap 15.6 using your drivers for the Expression XP-4200 series.
Now this driver is no longer on the list of drivers. I tried the Expression XP-440 which works the printer and scanner (under Sane)- but, why have you dropped the correct drivers seeing this is a relatively new printer?
If I look at the Epson Support site their Linux drivers do not show anything for Opensuse.
Can you please pull these drivers over from the 15.6 repository, or help me get the correct drivers and install them.
Thank you. I see these are 3 RPM’s which isn’t the best way to install. I would still prefer to see the normal installation via the print manager. Is there any chance that this is looked at by the software team?
You have to install the Epson Inkjet Printer Driver (ESC/P-R) for Linux and Epson Scan2 for printing and scanning.
These offers the drivers.
Epson Printer Utility for Linux is a utility for ink level and some more, but you must not use it.
To set up the printer, you have to use cups (localhost:631).
But when you download them, you get a rmp file and you have to move the rmp ending to rpm.
You can get Epson Inkjet Printer Driver (ESC/P-R) for Linux also here:
https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/16.0/
In Leap 15.6 these drivers are part of the OSS Repo, Leap 16.0 does not.
So you have the 2 possibilities.
Agreed. Similar to another recent topic where it was suggested to subscribe to the Printing repo to add the required open printer drivers.
Okay. I have downloaded the 2 RPM files. Now, installation - do I use the zypper approach or is there another way to install? I believe Cockpit is supposed to be use for installs too, but I haven’t yet managed to get it working.
After these RPM’s are installed, will the XP 4200 series drivers appear in the Epson list for printer management? And, I re-install the driver from there?
After the recommended upgrade to 16.0 I still have YAST (or some of it) on my machine. Online queries don’t recommend using it now. I’m almost tempted to take a few days out and do a complete reinstall of 16.0. Or, maybe just limp along to the next version. At this time I’m not too impressed with the new system. I know many of you like to work inside the Linux system ( I was a programmer and worked on UNIX for a while) but nowadays I rather prefer to work on top of the Linux system as I’m more interested in the applications I use. Sorry I have to let off some steam here. ![]()
Yes you can use zypper…
zypper in /path/to/foo.rpm
Then use the CUPS web interface to configure CUPS for the particular printer concerned: http://localhost:631/admin
The 1st RPM installed although the Signature could not be verified.
The 2nd RPM for the scanner fails. The rpm is extracted from the .tar.gz
Says it’s not a file.
DualBootWindows10:/home/garth/Downloads # zypper in epsonscan2-bundle-6.7.82.0.x86_64.rpm

You can ignore that warning.
BTW, you should show the exact command(s) you invoked, and the output generated, and post as preformatted text (refer to the </> button in the forum editor).
Sorry - I did a copy and paste. Shouldn’t have done that.
The 1st went through and installed. I did ignore the signature.
The 2nd I now see is a directory. Of course it wouldn’t install…
Here’s whats in it. It’s not an RPM… See image
The RPM package is in the “plugins” directory. Otherwise run the install.sh file (which effectively does the same).
Thanks for this help you are giving me.
The scanner drivers are installed. Now where is Sane? Myrlyn doesn’t show a Sane package - just the drivers. Is Sane still the scanner default or is there a new scanner to install? Where is it?
BTW I opened the print manager and it automatically led me through to using the new Epson XP 4200 series drivers. I did a test print and it works okay.
I’m presuming that when I can open Sane (or whatever) it will be the same.
As a Gnome user, there should be “Document Scanner” (AKA simple-scan) in the applications menu?
Okay. I found the repository and have installed xSane. Seems to all be running
hanks very much for your help.
All good. XSane is ancient!
