Printer and Scanner Setup Query

How do you set up a printer and scanner? I searched and all docs only mention Yast.
The modules I use most often are package management (Cockpit or Myrlyn is OK now), printer and firewall config.

The answer to this question depends on what brand/model printer you have.

Some general information:

For CUPS configuration, you can use the CUP web interface:
https://localhost:631/admin

Some printers require the addition of vendor drivers, and some include install scripts to help with the CUPS configuration. HP printers may be supported by HPLIP drivers and configured using the hp-setup utility.

Many modern network printers (IPP Everywhere and AirPrint) just work without extra drivers. If the firewall is enabled, make sure it permits mDNS (multicast DNS) so network printers can be detected.

For scanning, Linux uses the SANE framework. Many USB and network scanners are supported by the sane-backends package, while others may require the installation of a vendor-supplied driver first. You can test for scanner detection using scanimage -L.

If you need specific help, please share your printer/scanner brand and model, and what part of the setup you’re stuck with.

Thank you. My printer is HP, so far I have not needed anything other than Yast, but next time I will resort to Google and Chatgpt. It is a regression but I accept the realities.

Use

hp-setup

from hplip.
That should install your Printer/Scanner.

Maybe you have to dowload and install a recommended plugin before by:

hp-plugin

Nothing with Google or Chatgpt…

It is better to know the model. HPLIP printers can be configured using hp-setup. Others may support driverless printing. YaST is not needed and adds little value for such hardware.
