Postfix: 25 Connection refused error.

Hi everyone,
I am new to Linux world. I have a problem regarding postfix.

I have small network setup(LAN) for study purposes.

Below is the content of main.cf configurations, I used postconf command to display it.

My question is, whenever i send an email, I get the error ( 25 Connection refused ).

I disabled the firewall, still the same error is returned. Can anyone tell me why postfix is not sending e-mail locally.(LAN).

Is there any mistakes on my main.cf file.?

thanks,

Out of the box, openSUSE’s postfix only listens on localhost:25 as it’s only used to send notifications for root. To allow it to work as a server for the LAN or the Internet, you should enable SMTPD_LISTEN_REMOTE in /etc/sysconfig/mail and reconfigure postfix. Preferably this should be done with the sysconfig editor in YaST so that postfix’s config files get regenerated. Be sure you have the domains correct and will not be an open relay before you open postfix to the Net.

No success, I have also configured the /etc/sysconfig/mail.
The mailq returns the below errors.
Please help me. correct my problems.
Thank you

Post the output from, on the SMTP server:

netstat -anp | grep 'LISTEN ’

Also I presume you are mailing to a machine that is not receiving traffic
or none of the above would make sense or apply I don’t think. With that
in mind on the client box try to do the following replacing the ipAddress
with your SMTP server’s address:

netcat -zv ipAddressOfSMTPServerHere 25

You should see it show the socket open.

Finally perhaps get a LAN trace from the SMTP box to see what it is doing.
Checking /var/log/firewall may also be useful to see what is going on
there if anything (probably nothing if you are getting Connection Refused).

Good luck.

If you mofified master.cf or main.cf manually, YaST assumes you know what you are doing and hands over control of those files to you, refusing to modify them. If that’s what happened, you will find YaST’s versions in master.cf.SuSEconfig and main.cf.SuSEconfig (I think). To give back control to YaST, rename those files to master.cf and main.cf respectively. Then make any changes you need to main.cf via /etc/sysconfig/postfix (and indirectly, YaST).

Unless I’m going crazy this shows it is only listening on the localhost
address. That’s not helpful if the mail message is coming from outside
this system.

Good luck.

To clarify, Should I rename master.cf to master.cf.SuSEconfig
and main.cf to main.cf.SuSeconfig.?

Thank you, all

Just look in /etc/postfix where all the config files are. Just rename to remove the suffix, whatever it is, i.e. main.cf.SuSEconfig -> main.cf, master.cf.SuSEconfig -> master.cf.

I have moved main.cf.SuSEconfig to another directory, ls -al reveals the above files. should I move other files as well.

I am still getting the same error. I ensured to restart postfix.

Thanks

No, main.cf.SuSEconfig should be renamed to main.cf to give control back to YaST. It contains the correct inet_interfaces declaration generated from SMTPD_LISTEN_REMOTE=“yes” in /etc/sysconfig/mail.

Try to add here (/etc/postfix/main.cf) the IP of the computer running
Postfix:

inet_interfaces = 192.168.1.3, localhost

Then restart the Postfix service (run “rcpostfix restart”) and see what
happens when you send an e-mail.

Greetings,

Hi everyone,

I have managed to remove the SuSEconfig suffix form main.cf.

I am close to giving up with postfix. same error no matter what i do. I guess , I have no luck with postfix.

If you the error look closely, It says delivery temporary suspended.

Any comments, to fix my problems is appreciated.

Thanks,

C88044DBD7 459 Thu May 14 16:57:16 root@kundu.internal
(delivery temporarily suspended: connect to 192.168.1.3[192.168.1.3]:25: Connection refused)
root@myserv.kundu.internal

Again, probably postfix is only listening on localhost, as you can see from netstat -atn | grep -w 25.

Check for the line inet_interfaces in main.cf. It should be inet_interfaces = all. If not, you have to regenerate main.cf by running YaST postfix config again. Then you have to restart postfix.

The thing is either you have to stick to YaST when configuring postfix (or know what to do after editing /etc/sysconfig/postfix from the CLI), or you have to take responsibility for maintaining main.cf.

Thank you all,

I think the problem has been resolved. You were right about it.
(Either use Yast or configure manually approach.).

Now , I have one final question. I would like test postfix,( there are no e-mails, on the mailq.). I have used mutt to send e-mail to myself (root) , but no e-mail has bounced back.

The only machine on LAN is 192.168.1.X.

Thanks,

Look in /var/log/mail to see what postfix did with your email.

Thank you in advance;

#tail /var/log/mail reveals the following:

May 14 20:24:36 myserv postfix/qmgr[5995]: 4E73C4DAC8: from=<root@kundu.internal>, size=316, nrcpt=1 (queue active)

May 14 20:24:36 myserv postfix/local[6131]: 4E73C4DAC8: to=<root@kundu.internal>, orig_to=<root>, relay=local, delay=9.4, delays=9.3/0.01/0/0.05, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered to mailbox)

May 14 20:24:36 myserv postfix/qmgr[5995]: 4E73C4DAC8: removed

I guess, the e-mail was intentionally removed by postfix, but why?. How could I stop postfix from removing it.

Thank you all…

No, you didn’t read the lines carefully enough. First in line 2 the mail was delivered to the mailbox, then in line 3 the copy in the queue was removed. If the mail had not been delivered it would have stayed in the queue.

You will find root’s mail in /var/spool/mail/root

Thank You all for your help and support.

I have managed to resolve the above problem. I forgot to
export MAIL=/var/spool/mail/root.

Now everything seems to be fine.

Again, Thank you very much.

cheers,
