Here two trial installations of M5 & RC2 did write to MBR despite setting the install partition as target both times. Could you post brief explanation of how to avoid overwriting MBR?
Otherwise RC2 KDE looks good. I had problems with Intel sound reported elsewhere. PA provides system sounds but no sound from applications. Attempted various fixes suggested by others. Solved by disabling PA. Also noted omission of other opensuse installations from GRUB menu.lst.

When looking at the openSUSE installation summary, but before doing the install, you should see, under the category of Booting, that installing grub to the MBR should say disabled AND the status of installing the Grub boot loader to the openSUSE partition should say enabled. Did you see that status before you started the installation?
