Possibly bricked HP Pavilion 500-010xt after BIOS revision 8.17 Rev. A flash

Hi, I flashed the BIOS on a H-Joshua-H61-uATX (Foxconn 2ADA) mainboard, with Board Label PCWPA0PCY4T00k from JOS_815.rom v8.15 to 8.17 Rev. Using Windows 8.1 with the safuwin.exe utility in Powershell. Once the process completed, I powercycled the machine and entered the BIOS setup. I checked the BIOS revision version and it stated bios revision 8.17 Rev. A (all is good I thought), then I exited the BIOS setup. Now only a blank screen is displayed with no signal at monitor.

I have tried creating a usb medium with FAT32 filesystem and placed JOS_817.ROM file now renamed AMIBOOT.ROM at root. No boot to medium.

I have tried creating a bootable medium with UNetbootin containing FreeDOS then dropping in safuwin.exe along with AMIBOOT.ROM. The machine will not boot (screen blank).

I have tried simultaneously pressing ctrl ++ and shift ++ at boot and no luck. Is this more than BIOS set to quiet boot somehow?

What are your thoughts on how to correct this situation if possible?

Personally, I’d contact the vendor (HP) for support.

Hi, thanks for your thoughts. Am I able to share the link to the HP Support Forum thread created here?

Of course, this is a public website. You can get the link by clicking the “Share” button at the bottom of the topic.

ETA: I see you were asking if you could share the link to the thread on the HP support site. Of course.

This isn’t a Linux-specific question, though, so the info will just be useful for anyone else who stumbles across this thread looking for help with the same issue.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer, and quickly press esc.

  2. Press f2.

The BIOS searches three places for the diagnostic tools, in the following order:

a. Connected USB drive

NOTE: To download the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) tool to a USB drive, see Downloading

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) to a USB device on page 35.

b. Hard drive

c. BIOS

Hi

Wot a pigs ear I am making of this attempt to construct a sensible/structured reply.

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/help/hp-pc-hardware-diagnostics

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp155001-155500/sp155054*.XEX* (.exe)
It's 50+ meg download, and I am using a Lenovo, so cannot actually test it.

If in doubt please ask.

Hi, when I attempt to point webbrowser to site above, not found:

Can you point a link to where these directions are perhaps?
-Thanks for your help.

Hi

APOLOGIES spoken out loud.

THE XEX is wrong and is an attempt to be safe, so it should end exe.
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp153501-154000/sp153574.exe

It’s ok really.

Still cannot be found.

I think this tool is possibly what may be worth trying.

What are your thoughts on this?

I don’t think that’s going to help above with the machines current state (blank display, fans running). It’s going to probably have to be flashed with a programmer. Do you have any thoughts on coreboot? coreboot for end users

Hi

Hopefully the screenshots may help…

The link has worked twice for myself, your situation I cannot explain.

The ““HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support””

page has various downloads, and that is about as far as I can get in offering help.

Hi

If the piccy resembles your board, is there a Jumper for BIOS RECOVERY as per my screenshot?

Yes, that picture looks correct to the board on machine here, (excellent). That’s very nice to have here in the thread! I am not certain as to how to attempt to proceed though.

I should add that holding win + b keys then power machine on do not seem to help at all. Machines state when powered on now is fan spinning no lights on keyboard and no display input.

I think maybe to remove that jumper and onboard battery?

It seems that HP has hidden their external BIOS update tool. The tool is called the HP system BIOS Update Utility and can be used to reflash the BIOS outside of an operating system, if the machine is unbootable. I asked here and received a round about answer thus far. :< Re: HP System BIOS Update Utility (Where to locate)? - HP Support Community - 9272023

Here is a video of a technician using the HP system BIOS Update Utility to repair a laptop with similar problem. :< https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdb2e6hFl38

I’ll have to keep looking but I simply cannot seem to find it.

Hi

Hopefully the inline piccy may help…

Cuz I cannot seem to be able to attach it as an ODT or DOC file.

HP BIOS REpair

That is ok, I do think that pictures information is great for documentation (hold down v key), the machines cmos or whatnot is gone. I will not rule it out though of course. If you are able to click on external links I would like to share with you the latest happenings on the HP support forums. :< Re: HP System BIOS Update Utility (Where to locate)? - HP Support Community - 9272023
