Poor graphics

Hi,

I had some issues earlier with certain repositories and had to break several packages in order to resolve conflicts. After completion I discovered that the look and feel changed to worst. I feel like running wine or windows 95.

I’ve tried desktop confi but had no luck with it. Please check the attached screen-shots. Image 1& 2 are prior to system alter and the last is post alter.

Best,

David

Sorry but they all show up on my system crystal clear … therefore it will help to know exactly what you did/changed that resulted in breaking the system. Also which openSUSE version, what hardware, which DE are you running as this will help identify the problems.

Mate,

They dont look clear at all. I use opensuse 11.2 with kde 4.4

Below please find my hardware -

I hate to see pink/purple progress/side bar, old russian typewriter text on browser, wine like background on firefox and gnome apps.

I am not saying your screen isn’t poorly displaying, I am saying that you uploaded screenshots from your missbehaving set-up that when viewed by my working set-up render clear and good on my system. Now we need to figure out what has happened to your system to make things look bad.
I found lots of references to the nvidea MCP61 gigabit motherboard and using it with gentoo and ubuntu Linux (all with claims that Internet is flakely) but no mention of graphics irregularities.

What were you trying to do/update/change that gave the repo errors and what were the errors as this may give a clue to what has happened.

What did you try in the display settings?

Mods! maybe this should be under hardware where more knowledgeable people will see it!

You really shouldn’t have to break packages in order to resolve conflicts.

Could you please open a terminal and provide the results of:

zypper lr -d

Also, I’m assuming from the default background that you’re using openSUSE 11.2?

Take Care,

Ian

Right, here is what I did -

  1. I enabled all repos that caused conflicts at the time of install of some apps.
  2. I did ‘zypper verify’ and then fixed dependencies by switching over repos. Removed 26 repos while sorting out.
  3. At last libsigc 2.0-32 bit, which is used by skype and most gnome apps (Gparted in my case) failed to show up from pakage manager or Yast2. In order to correct that and get clear out put on ‘zypper verify’ i killed few things.

The output psoted earlier came from buntu while sorting out alsa. I switched from buntu to suse due to pulseaudio being a dedicated pain in the butt. I am yet to break pulseaudio here, have scheduled it for tomorrow.

Best,

David

david@linux-lst5:~> zypper lr -d

Unless you break you wont fix. Breaking stuff teaches a lot about the process of building it.

Okay, your repository list looks good. What exactly are you trying to do with your system? The fact that you had to remove 26 repos makes me believe you might have tried one too many one-click installers.

But as your system repositories are fine and are now no longer part of the problem, the only thing is to figure out the look and feel.

All I can see is that your firefox looks different. That’s usually a branding package or some other appearance package. I’m not at my linux system at the moment but two packages that pop into my head are something to the effect of firefox-branding-opensuse (just search for branding in yast and look for a firefox or mozilla package) and the Tango or Oxygen themes for firefox which can probably also be found by searching for firefox or mozilla.

Edit: Upon searching using Software Search at openSUSE.org, the packages are most likely MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE and MozillaFirefox-theme-Oxygen

Take Care,

Ian

Well I have reinstalled firefox thrice. Next first thing that I do with GNU/Linux or FOSS is to add more repos, my bad this time it screwed up. I have oxygen, tango and tiger installed but it is still the same. How about getting wine like background on all Gnome (empathy, pidgin, etc).

Checked the branding package and it is already installed.

Hi,

Somehow firefox appearance is changed now. But pidgin is still in wine mode.

best,

david

One last thing I can think of is GTK styles. Look and see if you have QT-curve as an option. If not you can search for it in Yast and install it.

Take Care,

Ian

Guy,

I have qtcurve-gtk2-32bit - QtCurve style for Gtk2 installed already. Still pidgin and empathy look very poor.

Best,

David

Do you also have Gnome installed? You might get better results if you did.

Yast - Software Management
View Patterns
Check Gnome

reboot

If you are still kde pure you will need to allow the deinstallation of kde-pure.

Carl:

Gnome is already installed. I couldnt find kde-pure or view pattern.

Thanks,

David

Please try this:

That is already set to clearlooks. I need some coffee, will be back in half an hour. Thanks for your help.

If you run in gnome
Is it looking any better?

My font settings are like this:

I also have imported the microsoft fonts folder and named it MSFonts to /usr/share/fonts

Right, I need MS Fonts. Try it later.
