Please help! failing to instal opensuse gnome 64 on Lenovo G50

Hi all,
i just bought a lenovo G50 and tried to install opensuse 13.2 from live DVD and also from live usb but unsuccessful.

dvd block at second screen: unable to load: c/…etc

usb: block at loading, message say: unable to load MBR

is there a way to still install it or its impossible?

Thanks a lot guys

does it have windows on it?
as it’s a new peace of software it mostlikely uses efi and secure boot.
you can probobly install openSUSE on it, but it’s a little more complex then it use to be.
If you have windows are you planning on keeping it?
you will have to do some tweaking in bios (not scary)
you need to provide some more info.
in the meantiime read some manuel’s
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:UEFI

Hi thanks so much for the reply!

i actually took out the initial disk mechanical disk with windows and installed a brand new sandisk ultra ssd (128gb) its empty.
iam trying to instal the live Gnome 64bit version from a usb stick.
what kinda of Bios tweaks should i do to be able to install it?
Thanks for the help

The people at Lenovo seams to have gone mad, see this lenovo thread for more info
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/Lenovo-G50-30-booting-from-CD/td-p/1726001
fist you need to use a pencil to push a hidden button and go to bios setup

while in bios you need to configure a few settings
Security Tab:

Secure Boot = Disabled

Boot Tab:

Boot Mode = Legacy

Boot Priority = Legacy First

Exit Tab

OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS or Disabled

save settings and reboot, then press the same button again and select boot menu
here chose the usb drive (it might appear as a hard drive but it will show the manufacturer) and boot from it
when linux loads you’ll be able to install it to disk.
I’ve never installed from a live disk maybe someone else can help with that

You should be able to boot to EFI mode and install via EFI. Of course some BIOS insist on booting Windows have no idea if this is one of them. It certainly appears to be different as BIOS’s go. Note that if dual booting you should install all OS’s in the same mode ie either all EFI boot or all legacy boot. Mixing modes can lead to trouble

as I said the Lenovo folks seams to have gone mad, you need to use a windows app to get to uefi
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/20256-uefi-firmware-settings-boot-inside-windows-8-a.html
but he said he removed the windows disk and has no OS, that’s why he got the no mbr error and why I asked him if he plans on keeping windows.

thanks I_A,

i followed all the steps you listed to tweack the bios (except security tab theres was no “Secure Boot = Disabled” setting).

got to the boot menu and selected hdd usb mass storage and got : “could not find kernel gfxboot”. it keep repeting endlessly!

thx

LOL noticed what you said but did not realize the extent that Lonovo had messed with the basic idea of a BIOS. ouch

So is it impossible to instal opensuse 13.2 on my lenovo??

thx

Hi
Use efi booting, you need to convert the new ssd to gpt format and then install from the DVD (not the live CD’s). You can boot from the live cd and use gdisk to convert it to gpt like;

gdisk /dev/sda
press w
press y

Boot the system from the install DVD and install.

According to this video (~54s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZXjM_VEFGQ
there is a secure boot option, that’s your current problem, disable it and you’ll be able to boot the live disk

according to the same video holding Fn+F2 should work just as pressing the side button for accessing bios

Hi and thx for the help i used Gparted on a live cd of linux mint to convert my ssd 128gb to gpt.

Hi
That would be an issue with DVD media, how did you create the DVD, did
you check the md5sum of the download? Did you burn the DVD at the
slowest possible speed?

Hi
Well that error indicates an issue with the dvd device or media.
Maybe it’s the media type not happy in the dvd device?

Try using a 8GB USB device?

Note that DVD/CD media burned on one machine may or may not work on another. Small differences in alignment can cause failures

USB sticks do not have this problem.

my 3c’s.
Those Lenovo’s by default have only one usb2 drives, installing from a usb3 will fail, here’s a pdf from Lenovo about what to do to install 7

when you tweak the bios select other OS, switch USB to 2.0,
are you shure that there is no secure boot option (there should be) from page 2 of the pdf:

If the BIOS version is lower than A7CN27WW, please update BIOs to 27 or above

Check your bios version that maybe your problem you might need to do a bios update, I’ve never updated Lenovo’s but usually it’s simple.

They do seam to have a new bios, I hope you kept windows as it seams the bios updater can only be run from windows 7/8

Thank you all !!!

finally worked i think my main problem was the first dvd i burned…it seemd alright on my workstation but wasnt good for the laptop!
anyhow it worek…maybe also the bios tweeking helped, have to report tho that theres was no way to make the usb install work :frowning:
but my system is up and running and im happy about it!

thanks again for the help you guys are amazing!
