playing analog ntsc channel from a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1250.

hello gurus:-

i have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1250 digital/analog tv tuner card in my 64bit suse12.3 box:

this card advertises north american atsc, digital qam and analog ntsc on a cable plant.

i can play the digital clear qam perfectly with the following two examples:-

vlc cqam://frequency=651000000:modulation=QAM --program=3
gmplayer dvb:// -vo x11

now i am trying to get the ntsc analog to work. i want to play (for example) ntsc analog channel 7 or 8 on the same coax cable. i tried the following two syntaxes but i am getting a green screen on one and a black screen on the other:

vlc v4l:///dev/video0:norm=ntsc:frequency=181250:channel=8
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:chanlist=us-cable:alsa:adevice=hw.0,1:amode=1:audiorate=48000: forceaudio:volume=10:immediatemode=0:norm=NTSC-M


  1. what is the full syntax to play ntsc analog video using vlc or mplayer? (i have googled this to death but the assumption is that i want to display composite video from the rca jack)
  2. is there yet another tool (like tvtime/myth) that can play ntsc analog video just to verify that this card even works with analog?
  3. what device am i supposed to use in the callup - /dev/video0 ?
  4. has anyone got this card to work with analog video?

NOTE: i am NOT trying to play composite video or rca from a dvd recorder-i want to play the analog channels on the same hose as the qam. and yes, i did verify the channels with a flatscreen…
