Pinta = Paint.NET in GTK

Paint.NET is a pretty good graphics application, but running it via Mono has been tricky because of the Windows forms. Now they took it and removed Widnows forms for GTK making it run natively in Linux!

I look forward to trying it out tonight (or the next couple of nights).

Pinta, Simple Painting for GTK
Pinta is a drawing/editing program modeled after Paint.NET. It’s goal is to provide a simplified alternative to GIMP for casual users. It is currently early in development.

It’s only in version 0.1, but I hope it improves enough to be included in openSUSE Gnome, which seems to include most of the Mono-based apps by default.

It would take a lot, though, for it to usurp Gimp as the best image editor for Linux.

Oh… it also makes me wonder if the F-spot project can use some of these changes to improve their image editing capabilities.

They should’ve better chosen Qt instead :wink:

Anyway, this far it only looks like a Linux version of the MS Paint that comes with Windows :silly:
We’ll see how good it gets.

I installed it in Ubuntu, and its great. I mostly use Kolourpaint for some simple graphic stuffs. But this one has good new feature over Kolourpaint.
Next plan is to install it in openSUSE.

Thanks dragonbite for posting it.

If it follows the progression of Paint.NET, it will include a lot more than MS Paint;

  • different file formats
  • layers
  • smart selectors
  • image adjustments such as color, b&w, alpha, etc.
  • effects such as blur, distort, noise, etc.

The people that started Paint.NET started with the simple to use MS Paint interface and reprogrammed it with C# and added a lot of features.

Paint.NET is kinda like a half-step below Photoshop and Gimp, but is really pretty nice.

I disagree. It has Layers, Effects, much wider tools palette. It’s much more advanced than standard Paint. This kind of app should be replacement for GIMP.

Hi
There is also MyPaint http://mypaint.intilinux.com/ I just updated it
to 0.8.0 in my repository.

I like MyPaint much more than Paint.NET. I even like it more than Gimp. I tried Gimp but never felt quite comfortable with it. MyPaint is more draw/paint oriented and works great with graphic tablets. And the brush, layer etc. windows aren’t annoying like gimp’s.

I think this is going to be a great tool when I don’t really have to whip out GIMP just to do some simple photo editing or some drawing.

MyPaint looks interesting. I just wish my tablet was detected as a tablet (absolute positioning) as opposed to a mouse (relative positioning) which it is in all Linux distros I’ve tried so far.

I can’t get Pinta to run in KDE 4.4.1. I did the one click install and it didn’t bring in any dependencies. Mono is installed. Anyone?

thanks

EDIT: Nevermind…I was missing some Mono libraries…runs fine now.

Hi
I see they have released version 0.2, maybe download the noarch rpm
from here;

thanks Malcom…I updated to V .2

Hi
I’ve built a 0.2 version and fixed the mono dependencies so it should
provide them if you install. Not a bad little program either :slight_smile:

yes, it’s a pretty great program. Also, shouldn’t this thread be under ‘Applications’ and not ‘General Chit Chat’? I had a heck of a time finding it :slight_smile:
