Pc is frozen

Hello

Since opensuse 12.2 i noticed a slow boot time. Then my pc is frozen , no more access to keyboard then , 4 times since 2 days :’(
how can i figure out what’s disturbing it ?
Thank you

well, i see you have an operating system not yet nine days old and you
have already replaced a major part of it (KDE) to a new level…which
prompts me to ask:

do you realize that Stability and Bleeding Edge do not exist on the
same machine?

i’d bet if you boot a live 12.2 CD and run it without customizations you
will avoid freezes…however if it too freezes then you need to boot
the CD again and run the Memory Test overnight, at least.

if you mean it might be linked with kde i had kde 4.9.1 already in opensuse 12.1 and no problems then

When you were at 12.1, did you also use the open source driver for your
Radeon HD 4850 or the proprietary one?

hello,

yes, i was already using radeon with 12.1

here’s how i upgraded to 12.2 :
zypper dup from init 3 with 3 repos (oss, non oss, and update of 12.2)
then reactivating my other repos after changing the version number from 12.1 to 12.2
then upgrading from init 3 using zypper ref && zypper up

Of course that newer radeon driver could be the problem, if the problem
occurs you could then reboot into runlevel 3 and fetch the
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
That would be the first thing I would check, since in my personal
experience when something freezes it is often the graphics card driver.
You can also try to watch tty10 before it freezes to see what is logged
there.

That looks perfectly fine as upgrade path (I do it very similar).

pc froze again when writing message #5 ( i noticed that magic keys are working, in fact allowing a clean reboot : alt + Syst Rq + R S E I U B )

today i have this : fabrice@linux-121:~/Documents> cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log [ 49.652] X.Org X S - Pastebin.com

if i grep for errors (EE) :
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

49.680] (EE) Failed to load module “fglrx” (module does not exist, 0)
49.695] (EE) FATAL: RadeonHD presently does not work with kernel modesetting (KMS).

why is it an error not to be able to load fglrx ?
is the 2d error the problem ?

I cannot directly find something in the log that gives me a clue about
the freeze.
I just can tell you a story which happened a few days ago with our
daughters PC which showed the same symptoms with an NVidia card (that
was with 12.1 before I upgraded her machine). I opened the machine and
it was full of dust, cleaned all that and it did not help, the graphics
card was already damaged (I tested the suspect card in another computer
to be sure).
Replaced it with an old card (5-6 years, btw an old ATI which I never
really used) which was lying around to see if that helps and it helped -
freezes gone. I ordered a cheap new nvidia and also with that no more
freezes.

So I suggest (if not already done):

Check your machine for dust and clean it. Maybe you did not notice
overheating before update simply because the demands for the graphics
card were a little bit lower.

Check if the graphics card (I am not an ATI expert) is supported by the
proprietary driver and test if it works with that without freezes. If it
does file a bug against the open source driver to improve that in the
future.
At least for nvidia it is true that the powermanagement for the cards is
much better with the proprietary driver than with noveau, the same could
be true with the radeon driver vs the proprietary ATI driver.

Since the magic key works after freeze the system is not completely
dead, can you ssh into the system from a different machine (if you have
one)? So you could check if it is just X which is frozen and other
processes are still working or not and you could fire up top and check
sensors output to get an idea if something is overheating.

This time i booted with another kernel that i had installed under 12.1 ( 3.5.0-1.16-desktop , from kernel.org ) . i’ll see it it helps or not.

About dust i’m going to clean the pc to be sure , dust is really difficult to avoid.

i know that fglrx driver works (i used to use it also) but amd drivers policy changed recently so i’m not quite sure which option is best for me now. i might try also if it’s better

the pc froze again this time i was still able after a bit to move around, so i had the opportunity to go to tty1 and tty10 : the last one was giving plenty errors very quickly … couldn’t read it i then installed fglrx but reboot was ko in graphical mode tty1 i saw using grep as above a message saying that device could not be found … i guess that my GC is dead Which model would you advise ? amd, nvidia ? Which one will be more comfy with linux drivers ? What are your requirements for a graphics card? But before you are going to buy one you could open a thread asking for opinions. My personal preference is nvidia, what model will suit your needs depends on what you want to do with it.

Wait, did you install the correct driver? From what I read you need the
Legacy-Treiber AMD Catalyst 12.6 not the main 12.6 driver which has no
longer support for the 4000 models.

hello,

Thanks for your precious help and link above
You’re right i was not using the right fglrx driver, i was not sure when things where going to xchange (or how) , after installing legacy it’s ok now.
i’m still wondering how come radeon went wrong (i had radeon installed 1st of all).

Glad to hear it works with the right driver. I can only guess that in
your special case (means with your graphics card model) either there is
some kind of regression with the radeon driver (since you said it worked
without freezes in the older version) or that you really suffer from
some other side effect that the newer driver comes to its limit because
other newer software (e. g. the desktop environment) is more demanding
than in the past. Not sure how to diagnose something like that.
One option would be to update to a newer kernel and see if that works
better since most of the GPU support is in the kernel itself, you can
also update the whole X11 + X driver stack with an extra repository, but
if you ask me that’s all more trouble than it is worth if you have now a
working system unless it is a lot of fun for you to fiddle with the
system and want to find a way to make the radeon driver work.

After all if the freezes don’t come back with the proprietary driver it
is unlikely to be a hardware problem and I would stick with it.

If the problem comes back at some point also with the proprietary driver
then my personal decision would be to replace the card.
I hope this does not happen and wish you much fun
