Sorry for the great writing
I came across this post by accident.
The linked repo privides rpm’s for tumbleweed with the latest nvidia driver. I gave it a try (after un-installing the manually {hard-way that is not} installed driver) and it worked perfectly.

Keep in mind that this referenced repo is a personal repo and may
disappear at any time. Also, it is not an officially supported repo and
you cannot expect any help from anyone other then the owner of the repo.

Further to my previous post I up-dated to to then latest snapshot 24052017 and could not get the nvidia driver installed again using the repo rpm’s - YMMV.
that repo seams to be part of Regata OS an opensuse fork
https://www.google.com/search?q=Regata+OS
I’m not sure how much work goes in it, the driver needs to be rebuild against the new kernel not necessarily updated afaik even the rpm driver builds some objects on your own machine only the nvidia propitiatory blob is included as a precompiled object
The repo has been updated quickly and now works with the new kernel in the latest snapshot. I suppose the catch is that if the rpm’s need to be updated each time the kernel is up-dated in a new snapshot - for people like me who update their system everytime a new snapshot is published - you might just as well re-install the nvidia driver the manual way.
