Packman: removing openSUSE 11.1 repositories

We’re going to remove the openSUSE 11.1 Packman repositories from our primary server and, hence, also our mirrors.

If you would like to keep a copy (for whatever reason, as they’re unmaintained), make sure to pull the tree before Monday (2011-02-28).

The reason, obviously, is that openSUSE 11.1 has gone End-Of-Life since mid-January, and as we’re restructuring our repositories, we do need quite some extra space right now and don’t want to put too much of a burden on our mirrors (there are a few rsync mirrors in there too).

Sorry to read about the inability to continue with 11.1 support (given evergreen project) but your reasons are understood.

Thanks for the warning.

Time to pull out my new 1TB external drive and grab the 11.1 repository.

There is an evergreen essentials
Index of /suse/Evergreen_11.1

Thanks Carl. Thats good to read. I’ve donated financially to Unixheads.org a few times, and its good to see my donations being put to good use!

Yes the Packman team (especially Pascal?) reacted fast.

There seems to be planned also to make
“Essentials” repositories for openSUSE Tumbleweed and for SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Service Pack 1 (SLE11SP1).

Pascal Bleser:

But I would guess that Pascal will be posting/blogging/mailing about the details of the Packman team’s work in the near future.

Have a lot of fun

Correct, after discussing with Wolfgang Rosenauer (who initiated and works on Evergreen) on the opensuse-project mailing-list about this, we decided to build for Evergreen (11.1).

That being said, we will remove our packages for 11.1 from our tree, as announced, but we already built the “Essentials” Packman repository for Evergreen_11.1 (already available). The Essentials repository will be much smaller than what we were providing for openSUSE 11.1 but we really had to do a cleanup, and Essentials should have what 95% of people are using from the Packman repository anyway (mplayer, vlc, k3b-codecs, libxine1-codecs, …).

It is still debatable whether we should also build Multimedia for Evergreen_11.1 (and/or Tumbleweed), but we’ll see about that later. We first want to get at least that essential set of packages ready for 11.4, Tumbleweed and Evergreen.

Oh and, yes, indeed, we also provide Essentials for SLE_11 (SP1).

Thank you Pascal for that update

And also many thanks for the additional work of now maintaining the core Packman packages not only for three but for six versions.

Martin

I changed my previous Packman repos setup in my PC running openSUSE-11.1 to that new Packman Unixheads Evergreen repos for openSUSE-11.1 and I am using YaST now to download and install apps. So its working well.

Hi
Just a note spotted on the Project mailing List;

Re: [opensuse-project] Removing openSUSE 11.1 Packman repositories

“OK, that stuff (37 GB) has now been copied to ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/packman-11.1

Thats good to know. Thanks.
