Configuring Active Directory domain services “formerly called DCPROMO” is now a separate operation when installing the role. After the Active Directory domain services role is installed, the administrator configures the server as a domain controller by using a separate wizard in Server Manager or by using the Windows PowerShell module ADDSDeployment.
The Active Directory domain services role is configured based on twelve years of hands-on experience. Domain controllers are configured according to the latest Microsoft recommendations. For example, Domain Name Service (DNS) and Global Catalogs are installed by default on each domain controller.
The AD DS Server Manager setup wizard consolidates many individual dialog boxes into fewer queries, and no longer hides settings in advanced mode. The entire role escalation process is done during installation using a single drop-down dialog box. The ADDSDeployment wizard and Windows PowerShell module will display information on significant changes and security issues, as well as links to additional materials.
The Dcpromo.exe program is saved in Windows Server 2012 only for unattended command-line installation. It is no longer used to run the graphical installation wizard. It is strongly recommended to stop using the Dcpromo.exe program for automatic installation and replace it by the ADDSDeployment module, because the corresponding executable will not be included in the next Windows version.
These new features are not backwards compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2 or later operating systems.
