OpenSUSE Leap 16 not ready yet?

But what on earth is Cockpit? The line you mention is more like a note
posted within a design team than adequate practical advice on how to use
Cockpit. I remember seeing it, and searching online for Cockpit, and
quickly concluding that I had nowhere near enough information to
understand how to use it. I would hope for at least instructions on how
to run it, and a sketchy outline of its functions.

There is an openSUSE wiki page dedicated to it:

The Cockpit people don’t seem to believe in screenshots; lots of blurb, no visuals. It may be just me, but when I am subjected to several screens full of text, and there is still no screenshot in sight, I won’t continue.

Here is a visual overview from a third party site:

…and after that I might be willing to endure those deserts of text. Maybe.

Compare with the Myrlyn home page.

Thanks! As you can see, I am pretty ignorant as yet.

Bare text doesn’t bother me. I’ll take a look. Thanks!

I’ve spent 2 weeks trying to get a stable desktop running on leap 16 to no avail. I just today attempted to reinstall using a newly downloaded install image and although the install runs to completion the install is broken even more as I can not get the system to run level 5. At this point there is so much wrong I think the opensuse developers should take a step back and fix it so that it will install for the common user. Opensuse has already missed a golden oppertunity with Window 11 screwing every one over so badly. If this was not rushed to market opensuse could have captured market share with Leap 15.6 because leap 16 is NOT ready for general use

Hi, welcome

You could have come here 2 weeks ago and you would have found a nice community that gladly would have helped you. That’s how it works. No need to contact a reseller, a call center. What kept you from doing that?
You are also making some semi-assumptions / suggestions like

It was not.

Still I’ve used opensuse for many years and although I’m not a developer I am pretty tech savy (40 years hard experience in systems and networking) and I’ve installed every version of OpenSuSE since version 10 and NEVER had this kind of trouble. You want the os to be usable by the general public not just a core of superusers and developers then you HAVE to do a better job.

Sorry I know you guys don’t like to hear critism but it’s the truth this version was not ready for release to the public and it still is not 100% functional. I should be able to boot up the installer, run the install then do my customization within and hour just like with Leap 15.6 and then be able to start work. Now I have at least 6 hours or more of trouble shooting things that should not be broken

@kdaniel7625 hmmm not seen that there, I’ve used the Agama installer that many times it just works… Now granted some issues with Nvidia and having to add nomodeset but a quick forum search should reveal that issue.

I’m still trying to figure out who the ā€œYouā€ person is, I’ve looked hard but never found them :person_shrugging:

It’s been over a year since the Leap 16.0 Alpha hit the scenes for testing, if y’all are not interested in testing and planning your upgrade process with your hardware and work flows, well, I guess we can blame that ā€œwhoā€ person?

With profiling installs can be even quicker, I’ve added my own installer password, just plug the USB, boot the system and do the install remotely. A very nice feature.

I want to see how agama works, I will download the openSUSE Leap 16 and see how it goes. That new installer is so controversial.

Will see :grinning: if it is really bad I will be back here and will agree to the people chastising it. :worried:

Leap 16 is a major transition release, and that is clearly documented in the release notes, which I hope you took the time to read before attempting installation…

You also chose to spend two weeks troubleshooting alone and only came here to declare the release ā€œnot readyā€. Had you asked earlier, you would likely have saved a lot of time. That’s how a community-supported distribution works.

Criticism is fine, but generalized or uninformed claims will naturally get pushback. If you want help fixing specific problems, people here will help, but that requires engagement and a bit of humility, not post-hoc condemnation.

Some truth, step by step. I performed a pre-release install without further ado.

Latest and greatest Leap 16 install came with a startling effect: openSUSE had created agama, which readily yields to the most common use cases.

Sure. Like defaulting to installing no graphical desktop environment.

At least it doesn’t default to Plasma
