openSUSE Leap 16.0 RC Build 156.4 31-Aug-2025

Is it just me or, is there something not quite stable in Agama while installing the Leap 16 Offline Image when it runs in an Oracle VirtualBox VM on an AMD machine, with all the Bells and Whistles enabled?

  • EFI
  • Secure Boot
  • TPM 2.0
  • AMD VM and Graphics Accelerator and 3D Graphics

I’ve been experiencing Agama hanging initially when setting German Language and German no-dead-keys Keyboard; later, after starting all-over-again, when choosing the Software Environment; and, later after starting all-over-again, when it installs – currently hanging at “Installing mailimporter-lang (142/2467)" …

The same happened some weeks ago before the RC version became available.

Or, should I simply move over to KVM as my preferred VM instance?

Has nothing to do with Virtualbox, Virtualbox is using a virtual Graphics like VMSVGA

stephan@opensuse160:~> [[ -d $(ls -d /sys/kernel/security/tpm* 2>/dev/null | head -1) ]] && echo "TPM available" || echo "TPM missing"
TPM available
stephan@opensuse160:~>
stephan@opensuse160:~> cat /sys/class/tpm/tpm*/tpm_version_major
2
stephan@opensuse160:~> mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot enabled

As you can see, TPM Vers. 2 is installed, secure boot enabled and this is my Virtualbox Hardware:

Nothing changed in the Installer, only added my Name and German Translation and German Keyboard.

Host is a Leap 15.6, in Virtualbox I have installed the GuestAdditions, craeted a new Mok Key, added them and rebooted.

The TPM2 revision is important too… tpm2_getcap properties-fixed | grep TPM2_PT_REVISION -A2 for most openSUSE products version 1.38+ is required…

HP Z440 with TPM2;

TPM2_PT_REVISION:
  raw: 0x74
  value: 1.16

Dell 3080 Micro with TPM2;

TPM2_PT_REVISION:
  raw: 0x8A
  value: 1.38
opensuse160:/home/stephan # tpm2_getcap properties-fixed | grep TPM2_PT_REVISION -A2
TPM2_PT_REVISION:
  raw: 0xA4
  value: 1.64

openSUSE Leap 16.0 in Virtualbox 7.1.4

Leap 15.6 host:

 > tpm2_getcap properties-fixed | grep TPM2_PT_REVISION -A2
TPM2_PT_REVISION:
  raw: 0x8A
  value: 1.38

Then something else is weird – I enabled the following VirtualBox settings before starting the VM to install the Leap 16 –

  • Processor Tab: PAE/NX and Nested VT-x/AMD-V were disabled – I enabled both.
  • Acceleration Tab: Paravirtualization Interface – didn’t change it – may have to inspect the setting.
    Nested Paging – may have to inspect the settings.

And, I’ll stay with VirtualBox – will report back next week.

On my 15.6 host, I have Leap 16 RC in a VBox VM too.

  1. Both my PAE/NX and Nested VT-x/AMD-V settings are not enabled, and have never been enabled.
  2. On Acceleration, Enable Nested Paging is enabled (default to my knowledge). Paravirtualization Interface is set as “Default”.

The ISO that was used is “Leap-16.0-offline-installer-x86_64-Build148.4.install.iso”. It was a slight challenge to install, mostly because of the quirky Agama installer. It took me 2-3 attempts to install it.

Same here, only change I made was to increase the memory of the graphics to 128MB, set the memory to 16 GB and use 4 cpu’s.

Also enable secure_boot and TPM and set it to Vers. 2.

I’m very conservative with the Processor, Memory, and Graphics

  1. Video Memory set to 32 MB (Controller set to VMSVGA, 3D Acceleration enabled).
  2. Base Memory set to 4096 MB and on CPU.

Shockingly, performance is good, considering the settings :+1:
(Using KDE Plasma)

Thanks everyone.

With Processor Tab: PAE/NX and Nested VT-x/AMD-V disabled and, the 3D Graphics Acceleration disabled, Paravirtualization Interface set to “Default” and, Enable Nested Paging enabled, everything is fine.

  • Re-installed – everything ran smoothly.

Once again, thanks everyone.
