OpenSuse 64 almost without problems except slow boot.

Hi!

I’ve got openSUSE running on my HP Compaq 6710b laptop for over two weeks now and I quite like it. Almost everything works perfectly, including my Windows 7 on Oracle VirtualBox.

Unfortunately it’s got a minor glitch, which may force me to reinstall and choose another OS.

If I start my laptop, it’s s.l.o.w… booting alone takes about fifteen minutes, and after logging on it takes about twenty five minutes before my system is ready for use.
By use I mean reboot, because the system is still slow.
However, after rebooting, the system works normally.

I cannot seam to find the reason. It might be related to switching between my wired and my wireless network, but I’m not sure.

My messages log contains many entries like this:
aug 7 19:43:12 betabit-bart kernel: [80616.002344] iwl3945 0000:10:00.0: Failed to get channel info for channel 140 [0]
(iwl3945 apperently refers to my wireles adapter)

I also suspect virtualbox. On booting it sais:
vboxdrv: Warning: 2.6.31+ kernel detected. Most likely the hardware performance
vboxdrv: counter framework which can generate NMIs is active. You have to prevent
vboxdrv: the usage of hardware performance counters by
vboxdrv: echo 2 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_counter_paranoid

following this advice does nog work: there is no /proc/sys/kernel/perf_counter_paranoid, so echo-ing to it returns an error.

I’m desperate because I cannot afford an hour delay everytime I need to do work. I’m going to try re-installing my pc next week, but I’d much rather find the reason an the solution.

It’s difficult to obtain a bootlog of a slow boot; the boot log is overwritten every boot. If anyone has any tips, I’d appreciate it.

Hit esc key during the boot splash and you should see where it hangs

Try failsafe too, is it the same?

Strange issue… my openSUSE 11.3 64-bit box boots and it’s ready to use in about one minute. it works same fast just after boot and after few days of uptime (haven’t tried longer uptimes but i’m going to try).
