I have recently upgraded my son’s laptop to 13.1 from 12.3. On the 12.3 system, all the video etc was working perfectly.
With a “vanilla”, that is no kernel parameters, all video was very slow and jerky. Following some leads, I added the “nomodeset” parameter to the kernel at boot time and this cured the problems for all video playing except VLC.
I have only had to use this parameter before with older Nvidia cards. The graphics on the laptop are;

When trying to play a DVD via VLC, the video looks frozen but every now and again, a new image will appear. Sound, meanwhile is perfect. VLC messages are continuously reporting that 5 seconds of video are being lost with the extra “(computer too slow)” appended.
It was nowhere too slow for VLC in 12.3 and things like Kaffeine play the same DVD fine.
Any clues anybody?
